| I feel a bit of a johnny-come-lately to your stories but after reading In Dark Places, I'm hurriedly catching up and starting with your first tale here. And it's a good one. I like the differences you draw between Elladan and Elrohir--and the confusion Estel has between the vast differences in how his brothers treat him. Very wrenching. And I could almost see Elrohir biting his tongue against blurting out Estel's true story... that's one thing that I always wondered about, as Estel came of age: how in the world did the twins not say something? I guess being elves, they have the wisdom to understand that timing is everything, and Elrond's word is law. But still... I always imagined there might have been moments when one or the other wanted in the worst way to shout, "You're to be the King!!" Which would be completely wrong, of course. So this story was really satisfying to me in the way you handled Elrohir dropping just the vaguest of safe hints. I'm looking forward to delving into the rest of the stories. Author Reply: As I always say, when it comes to reviews it’s always better late than never! :-D Actually, I love it when my older stories receive new reviews, for I like to know that they are still being read and enjoyed. I’m so glad that you enjoyed this little fic, the very first fanfic I ever attempted to write. I, too, find this to be a very interesting topic, obviously. I think it would have been very difficult and painful for the twins to keep this secret, and to have to keep all knowledge of his father from Aragorn, particularly because I imagine Arathorn as having been a very good friend of theirs. I write more about this in some of my other fics. If you care to read more, you might want to read them in chronological order (which is not the order I wrote them in) as each one builds on what has come before: Touch, To Give Hope, Answers and Questions, Day and Night, I Will be Your Memory, A Yearling Shoot. | I think I read this on HASA, but wanted to say Loved it! I like how you were able to show the complexities of the twins relationship with a growing Estel...now i'm off to read the next part. | "Go not to the Elves for advice, for they will tell you both yes and no." Seems to me the Master himself wrote that one. A bit more of the puzzle is there for Estel to examine, in the few years left before his true name and lineage are restored to him. Author Reply: I had that quote in mind when I thought about a poor young Estel trying to get some answers out of his foster brother! I think that if one had lived as long as these elves and half-elves, and gained even half as much understanding, one would inevitably come to the conclusion that “yes and no” is really the only true answer to just about any question. | A very fine story for your first posting here. Very well written I think it was a good idea of Elrohir to tell Estel what he did, it must indeed have been very hard for the twins to love and loose so many of their friends. I can easily inderstand Elladan's actions, but I can understand that for young Estel it must have been really painfull. The comparison between himself and the puppy was a very good one. | Welcome aboard Peredhil, What a lovely surporise to find you here. I've enjoyed your stories immensely at other sites so it was a welcome surprise for me to read this new (well new for me anyway LOL.)story. Boy lots of emotion in this one. Not sure who I feel sorrier (is that a word?)for Estel or Elladan. Though I think maybe this time Elladan could use a subtle hint to lighten up a bit. (maybe a rock upside the head?) Hope they can work things out. Elrohir is definitely stuck between a rock and a hard place with his 2 brothers. Post soon, E Author Reply: Thanks for the welcome, eliza61. Perhaps reading this story will give you a bit of a better understanding of Elladan’s actions in “Day and Night” (which I will start posting here soon). I really do feel sorry for Elladan. After almost three thousand years of loving and losing one friend after another, I would think it would be hard to so easily open his heart to another mortal. To call one “brother” I would think would be even more difficult. You’re right, maybe a rock to the head will help him lighten up a bit, though I don’t think he’s ever going to be a really jovial fellow. ;>) peredhil lover | |

| Welcome to SoA - I'm so pleased to see you posting here! I still like this story - Estel comes across as young and uncertain, but growing to maturity quickly. Elrohir is understanding and compassionate, but his veiled references must be infuriating for Estel :>) I still want to thump Elladan, though. Jay Author Reply: Thanks for the warm welcome, Jay! I really am glad to be posting here. As is pretty obvious from my writing, I have been absolutely fascinated by the twins ever since I was first introduced to Tolkien’s world many years ago, and since I began reading LOTR fanfic over the last four years, I have enjoyed many of your stories about Elladan and Elrohir. It is still hard for me to believe that my writing is now being read and reviewed by some of the greats of the LOTR fan fiction world! Thanks for your kind words, and I hope that you can feel a bit of sympathy for Elladan. I sure do. I started thinking about what it would be like for immortals to be in such close contact with humans for so many centuries. To get to know so many of them, call them their friends and brothers and grow to love them, only to watch them age and die, over and over again. Poor Elladan felt he just couldn’t take it anymore and tried to shut Estel out of his heart. Though, truth be told, he didn’t succeed, and he isn’t fooling anyone.
