Divers Drabbles II  by Raksha The Demon 9 Review(s)
VirtuellaReviewed Chapter: 6 on 5/28/2009
"We both are far from home."

I've never looked at it like that before, but yes, this is certainly something these two have in common.

Author Reply: Oops, I missed this review - thanx, Virtuella. Both Frodo and Boromir loved their homelands very much, and risked all they had to save the Shire and Gondor.

Excellent companion to "The Burning of the Year"! :) Boromir's not my favourite character, but I have to feel for him in this ficlet! And I loved Frodo's appearance to comfort Boromir - ironical, that is, considering what will happen next between them...

Author Reply: No, Boromir is not one of my favorites either, but he was Faramir's brother, and seems to have exerted a good influence on him, especially in childhood; and whatever else can be said about Boromir, he was a very brave man. And for someone like Boromir, used to being the center of attention in Gondor, and often celebrating Mettare at home, it had to be hard on him to be stuck in a place he would have thought of as alien, at that time of year. I don't think that he and Frodo had much in common, but I could see them bonding, or at least commiserating in an understated way here...

Yes, it is a sort of companion to The Burning of the Year! Thanx for reviewing.

Yes, lovely, although the Hobbits weren't in the White City for Yule. Yet I can certainly see these sentiments had they indeed been there.

Thank you.

Author Reply: Actually, the drabble takes place in Rivendell, before the Fellowship sets out; and Boromir is thinking of songs being sung in the White City without him being there...

Thanx for reading; and I'm glad you liked the story.

Oh Raksha... this is perfect. *goes to sob quietly in a corner of the Hall of Fire*

Author Reply: Thanx, Agape! For a moment, Boromir and Frodo could share a moment of understanding and shared sorrow. It's so sad that Boromir never made it home; but the next Mettare celebrated in Minas Tirith would have been very different even if he had...

That there would be no observance of Mettare, since the elves celebrated it on a different date, would make it even sadder for Frodo and Boromir. Both of them embarked on the quest with the explicit intention of saving their respective countries (I think this was more true for them than for any other members of the Fellowship), so I like the idea of them commiserating when they are homesick.
A thoughtful drabble for the midwinter holiday.

Author Reply:

I couldn't make up my mind whether Elrond would arrange some kind of Yule celebration to cheer up Frodo or not; but decided that ultimately it wouldn't make much of a difference. Frodo would yearn for the type of Yule observance going on in the Shire, especially since he probably believed there was little, if any, chance he would ever participate in it again. And Boromir; all the family he has in the world is celebrating Mettare in Gondor, and father and brother are celebrating the rites in Boromir's beloved, doomed City - he's got to feel lonely and longing for home.

Thanx for the review!

Two fish out of water - it must have drawn them closer together. At least until the Ring started its whispering.

Author Reply: Hopefully, the voices of all those Elves singing Tra-la-la, Back to the Valley drowned out the Ring, at least now and then.

Frodo liked the Elves, and being at Rivendell; but he was already scarred by the Ringwraiths, and possibly felt singled out for doom at this point, a feeling that Boromir, heir to the rule of an imperilled land, probably shared. And they couldn't help but think of happy times at home.

I don't see Frodo and Boromir as having a lot in common, but at times, like this, they could have shared a quiet moment of understanding.

Thanx for the review, Bodkin!

This is very haunting and it is good to see a rare moment of rapport for Frodo and Boromir. It is so sad to know, Borormir will never see home again.

Author Reply: Terribly sad to think that the last time Boromir marked the year's turning was in a place so far from his home and kin. And poor Frodo probably believed it was the last time he'd see the year end, too.

This is sweet. I love how these two are brought together by a shared homesickness.

Author Reply: There aren't too many Frodo/Boromir moments; so I thought of both of them finding common ground in homesickness. Rivendell was beautiful and hospitable, and there would be pretty songs, but one always thinks of home at holidays if one isn't there. Also, Rivendell didn't celebrate Yule for another three months or so.

Thanx for reviewing, meckinock!

Oh, two home-sick people at Yule. And neither sees his home again - at least not properly.

Author Reply: Thanx for reading, harrowcat. Yes, much as Frodo loves the Elves and seeing Bilbo again, I think he'd yearn for the more homely, familiar ways of the Shire at this time of year; especially since Rivendell's New Year is celebrated in the spring. And Boromir would think about Mettare in Minas Tirith...
