It's an old chestnut, this tale, but transfering it to Beren and Luthien was a masterstroke. But the best is having to revive Bilbo afterwards, and his nonstop case of the giggles. How very Bilbo! Author Reply: A very old chestnut indeed, perhaps 1,000 years, I guess! It's always been one of my favorites. Thanks for reviewing.

Oh I do like this GA! But no wonder Bilbo needed reviving and can you just imagine Elrond or Aragorn hearing this version of the tale? Author Reply: This tale appears in a couple of my other stories, "The Sword of Elendil" (where Aragorn hears it), and "The Blue Book of Bilbo Baggins," where Faramir reads it. It's a takeoff on Sir Gawain and the Loathly Lady, a tale in the Arthurian cycle (Welsh version). Chaucer used it in "The Canterbury Tales" as the Wife of Bath's Tale. G.A.
