What a lovely, loving gift he got. I do wonder what he saw - I'm sure his own heart and soul reflected in those lumunious eyes he so longed to look into again or some such gift. Both had their golden treasures in each other. Namarie, God bless, Antane :) Author Reply: Perhaps he saw what he wished to see, or something else, or perhaps realized the time for such wishing was not yet, while he held the treasure of his family right there in his hand. Sam apparently never told what he did (or didn't) see.

Sorry, just realised I had somehow forgotten to review this. The daughter of my friend would say something about Alzheimer ... ;-) Even the grotto in itself, without the mirror, would have been beautiful. You know, I’d dearly love to see the garden of Bag End! With such a one as Sam to maintain it, it must be wonderful. Was truly surprised about this last gift from Galadriel. I had always assumed she had taken her mirror with her to Valinor and would never have thought of it ending up in the Shire. Though I have to admit it could be a wonderful thing for Sam if it showed him his beloved Master, healed and happy, in Valinor. But I doubt it worked for Sam, at least not in this way. And maybe it is for the best, as I suppose it would have distracted him too much from his family and duties if he could watch Frodo through the mirror. Author Reply: So glad you like this one. No one said anything about Galadriel taking the basin and ewer with her, so I assumed it would have remained in Middle Earth--and who better to gift them to than Sam. And I, too, would wish to see the gardens. As for seeing Frodo in the mirror, I agree with you--too much distraction. Thanks so for the feedback.

Oh, that grotto sounds like a wonderful place... very peaceful and a wonderful place to rest and be at ease. I love the image of Sam trying it out and then realizing it wouldn't work for him... :) It's what any of us would do! Author Reply: Oh, I'm so glad you approve, Radbooks. Yes, I think we all would want at least to TRY the mirror for ourselves; but for Sam to realize that for him, whether he was granted his own visions or not, this could perhaps become a sort of Mirror of Erised was important Thanks so much for the review. And again, I LOVED the first true misunderstanding between Thomas and Rebecca--how very real it was.

Sam is a great gardener! His grotto sounds beautiful - with the basin providing the final touch. He has a long time to live in happiness in the Shire and ... be one and whole - and I daresay such things helped him enormously. Author Reply: Yes, Sam, I would think, would manage to bring beauty out of most things he'd turn his hand to. And realizing he can't live forever seeking visions of elsewhere when he has a life here and now, he sets the basin within the grotto so he can be one and whole. I'll admit this was in part inspired by the Mirror of Erised.

Oh, wow!!! This time I really *am* speechless! Such imagery...wow. There's something about this whole piece I can't describe. Somehow it reminds me of some of the more classic children's books my mom read to me before I could read them for myself, the kind that brought me to tears that I could never explain. And yet it's deeper. Maybe that's it--a simplicity combined with so much deeper beauty. (I told you I didn't know what to say. :)) I agree with your other reviewers: it never even occurred to me to wonder about the Mirror. But what a fitting place and caretaker! And I think I know what Sam saw. :) God bless, Galadriel P.S. And I also agree on this point: you do make it look so easy! And not just this, either. Having reflected on the latest in "Joy" for most of the evening, I find myself wondering repeatedly how on earth you keep up with so many Hobbits, OCs and canon characters alike. I'm for ever realising I left something out, forgot that so-and-so was only such and such an age in this or that year, and am hopelessly disorganized when it comes to family tree notes. Author Reply: I have to add and subtract, move and adjust frequently as I review what I'm ready to post, and often I have to redo great sections of it as I go. I do have a fairly good memory, but find myself still forgetting, reminding myself, and so on. But I thank you for the compliment. I was trying for a dreamy feel to this one, and I'm so glad I accomplished it. I am honored by all who've reviewed it. Thank you indeed for it all.

This is so beautiful. I love the dreamy feel to it. Author Reply: As that was precisely what I'd intended, I'm very flattered and gratified I managed to reach that state. Thank you so much!

I've always wondered what happened to Galadriel's mirror - this is such a beautiful story, Larner. A wonderful look at Sam and his appreciation of beauty. If only everyone would work in harmony with nature like the hobbits do. *sigh* Author Reply: Elves are in harmony with the wild, and Hobbits with cultivated earth; between them they make a formidable partnership. Add it the aid of Dwarves with their understanding of stone and the bones of the earth, and they are almost indomitable. Am so glad this has been so well accepted. Thank you.
