Letting Go  by Ellie 4 Review(s)

Yes ... Ingwe would have found it very hard to send out his people while staying behind. Looked on it as betrayal, perhaps, and cowardice. But then, if the Valar didn't want him to go, he couldn't have gone against them.

I'm glad Mrs Ingwe managed to offer him consolation - and shared his watch over their extended family.

Author Reply: Ingwe had to be very courageous and very loving in order to have led his people as he had for so long and through such difficult circumstances. I felt sorry for him having to stay behind. His wife could not completely console him, but knew what to do to stop his brooding, at least temporarily. I thought it fitting that if he was the patriarch of the Vanyar, she should be the matriarch, and as most moms know, their husbands are extra children for them to look after sometimes.

This was just lovely Ellie, and you embodied much of how I myself see Ingwë in his thoughts and concerns for his people. It must have been very difficult to give the order to take up arms knowing that he himself would not be able to lead the armies. I think that all good "kings" see their subjects as their "children", as people to be cherished and nurtured rather than lorded over. Findrod exhibits this trait in my own story, as do the other three kings (at least I hope they do) and this is a trait that I try to show the Valar having as well. As Irmo tells Finrod: "Anyone can rule. The trick is not to rule, but to guard". You show Ingwë as one who guards and that's the best sort of "king" to have. Well done!

Author Reply: Thank you very much! I'm glad you enjoyed my story and like my Ingwe!

I can't think with all of the distractions just now (the kids just got home) so I'll just end with Thanks for reading and reviewing!

How nice to see a story from you!
As usual, you paint a poignant moment with lovely language. Personally, I think the Valar knew they would be taking a risk letting Ingwe go to war. It would be terrible for this king to be spiritually damaged and unable to continue as the moral core of the Eldar. Let alone killed like Finwe. I liked the closeing very much. But, was alittle disappointed that his queen did not have more insight to offer. Letting go was in his thoughts, but she did not really help him accomplish that. Even if he needed to rest, she merely distracted him. He ended up resigned, not hopeful, about his peoples fate. Rather bittersweet.

A agree that Ingwe could not be risked in war. He would have been a glorious prize indeed if Morgoth had captured him.

As for his wife, I don't think she had much reassurance to offer him for she was suffering as well, and all that they would have known of war and the situation in Middle-earth would have been what Earendil told them and none of that was good news.

She did only succeed in distracting him, but I think they had had this conversation many times before and she was simply trying to get him through his mood so he could rest and face the next day. Yes, it was bittersweet.

Oh, this was exquisite! Thank you very much for writing this. I'm currently re-reading the Silmarillion and am approaching the War of Wrath and I love seeing the fanfic interpretations of the characters that I'm reading about.

Ingwë Ingwion was a remarkable person in the history of Middle Earth and you made him (and his wife!) feel "real" to me. Great job!

Author Reply: I'm pleased I brought Ingwe and his wife to life for you. I have wanted to write about him for a long time and lacked the right plot and muse until recently.

I'm glad you enjoyed my story. I like writing about the time surrounding the War of Wrath, for some strange reason I have yet to figure out, and have written a number of them from different vantage points.

Thanks for reading and reviewing! Enjoy re-reading the Sil!
