“I wished to thank thee, Perhael.” Sam could feel her reading his confusion. What would the Lady of the Stars be thanking *him* for? “As did Iorhael, in calling upon me when thou wert in direst straits and by that calling, allowed me to help thee, as I could not have without thy plea. Thus I was permitted to send thee Light, and in so doing, helped to foil the Foe.” What a wonderful meeting! I never thought of that and Varda/Elbereth's humility in thanking Sam is so neat. It reminds me of something I heard before that God and His Mother have so many blessings they want to give but remain ungiven because no one asks for them. I love what Varda said to Sam about that. Gives you a whole new way of looking at things. Hantanyel! Did you ever get to read my Dreams come true that your letter R inspired? I tried finding that No Living Man story you recommended but couldn't. Namarie, God bless, Antane :) Author Reply: That really is the sort of thing I had in mind here. After the War of Wrath, the Valar bound themselves not to interfere directly in the problems of Middle-earth; but I think that when asked, there was still help and blessings they could give. It's by Elana: http://www.storiesofarda.com/chapterlistview.asp?SID=1672 and it's extremely funny! And I shall have to go and find your fic!

Wow...that was excellent and *so* well written! :-) I've heard of Iorhael but never Perhael - that sounds rather nice and fitting for Sam. Now...wouldn't you just love to write something like this on the lines of Pippin and Merry arriving in the Far Green Country? (hint, hint!) PF Author Reply: Perhael was Sam's Elvish name, as given in the "Field of Cormallen". Hmm...well, only problem with that is that I'd have to write them dying, and I'd really rather not go there!

Now that's an eye-opener and no mistake! A visit from Elbereth - I'm surprised Sam managed to stay coherent. I can see all his years spent as Mayor and raising 13 children has prepared him for just about any surprise. And I'm glad he's finally able to drop the "Mr." off of Frodo. Author Reply: I think you are quite right about his years as Mayor, and as patriarch of the Gardner brood would have made a good deal of difference. And it hardly would be fair to Frodo if he continued to be formal, when they are the only hobbits there!

Goodness. All it took was a visit from Varda - and Sam's managed to drop the Mr. Very impressive meeting! (Although I suspect Sam was secretly probably more thrilled with meeting Frodo again after all these years.) Author Reply: Well, I think it helped him make his mind up. I'm sure he'd known Frodo would prefer it, and I think She helped him get his nerve up. And yes, I do suspect you are right.

Aw! :D Wow! A beautiful, lyrical description of Varda and of her voice. And I love it that Sam has finally decided to try to let go of unnecessary honorifics! *grins* (My mind goes back to the "proper" challenge of A New Reckoning.) God bless, Galadriel Author Reply: Thank you! I thought that She might help Sam be willing to let go of the honorific, finally. After all, "my" Sam allowed Goldberry to teach him to swim finally! So if a Maiar could do that, how much more of an effect would a Valar have?

Oooo! Lovely and very mystical! Dear Sweet Sam :-) Author Reply: I am glad it came across as mystical--I've never written one of the Valar before! Thank you!

What a beautiful description of Varda! And I love the idea of this meeting giving Sam the courage to finally drop the "Mr." I'm coming late to this series...will have go back and read some more! Author Reply: I've never written one of the Valar before--I worried about getting Her right. And yes, it was that which gave him courage. I hope you like the others!

Lovely Dreamflower. I think that all Sam's reactions are perfect. Definitely one for the favourite's list. Author Reply: I'm glad you think so. Much as I love Sam, he's sometimes a little harder for me to write! Thank you!

Oh, this is so right for the two of them! We must ask to receive. Author Reply: That was exactly my thought--that if they had not called upon Her, she would not have been able to help them!

Awww. For some reason this makes me think of "Shire" and the Lady who watched over the hobbits in the vales of the Anduin. How lovely that She was there to greet Frodo, and then Sam. And Sam addressing Frodo as an equal! Will hobbits never cease to surprise me? Author Reply: I'm glad. I thought that perhaps She would wish to thank them for giving her a chance to be part of their Quest. I am sure it was very frustrating for the Valar not to be able to interfere directly. For some reason, it just seemed to me that it had to be the moment Sam finally took up the challenge Frodo had long ago given him, to be friends only, and no longer Master and Servant.
