Dawning Hope  by Radbooks 9 Review(s)
LarnerReviewed Chapter: 1 on 4/7/2007
Changes of this magnitude can be difficult indeed. I'm rather glad Theodred overheard the conversation and has an idea how to help.

Author Reply: Thanks for reviewing, Larner! Oh, I can't imagine losing both parents so close together and then having to move to a new city like they did. I thought that there had been some lag time between the deaths of their parents but they did die in the same year, though it doesn't say how far apart the deaths were. Very, very difficult for the children, though children are resilient.

This is enchanting and I like the voices you give the children. Looking forward to more!

Author Reply: Thanks so much for your very kind words!

I liked this. Poor Eowyn, trying to adjust to a new life without her mother. That would be so hard on a child. I do hope Theodred will do his best to help her out. He seems to be rather protective of his cousins, which is a good thing. I look forward to the next chapter.

Author Reply: Thanks for reviewing Misty! I don't know how Eowyn and Eomer handled losing their mom and dad within the same year... it had to have been devastating to them. Children are very resilient, though. The next chapter will probably be posted this weekend sometime.

Hi Radbooks, thanks for linking to this story. I think this is the first one I've read about *young* Eomer and Eowyn, and I liked it very much. I felt so sorry for Eowyn; it was hard enough losing everything and then finding a rather cold nursemaid in her new home. Eomer was just right - loving but still an ornery brother!

Author Reply: Thanks for the review Pentangle! I'm glad you enjoyed it. I don't think I've ever seen a story about a young Eowyn and Eomer either. It was just one of those ideas that came to me when I was trying to think of an idea for the prompt word, 'abandoned'. This story strayed from that original idea, but that was where this started... it's funny where things start and where they end up. I was looking at the Teitho contest for this upcoming month and this story would fit it perfectly... well, if it was open to any LOTR characters! :)

Ahh! Eomer is a nice big brother - and Theodred is a good cousin. Eowyn is so young to have lost her parents and her home. I'm not surprised she desires a return to familiarity. Two weeks is far too short a time for her to have adjusted to a new life. Poor kids.

Author Reply: Thanks for reviewing Bodkin! Eomer is a nice big brother and a normal boy as you'll see in the next chapters. I had two of those myself! They could drive me crazy at times and be really nice at other times. *grin*

It will take the Eowyn and Eomer quite a bit of time to adjust to their new home and new family life. I can't imagine what it would be like.

I hadn't really thought before just how hard it must have been for these orphans and you have given me new insight into them.

Author Reply: Thanks, Linda! One thing I learned when I was looking up the death of their parents was that they died in the same year which was something I didn't know. I thought maybe there was a few years in between. So, they really went through a lot in a very short amount of time.

It really makes me think more about Eowyn as an adult. We always think of the influence that Grima had on her - that was huge, but the death of her parents and losing her home also had to play a big part in who she was. Just random thoughts here. :)

Raksha The DemonReviewed Chapter: 1 on 4/4/2007

Poor little Eowyn needs a mother, or at least a very motherly person to care for her. Would her grandmother have been alive at this time?

Eleven year old Rohirrim boys didn’t cry. - would Eomer have thought of himself as Rohirrim or "Eorling", Rohirrim being a Sindarin term (and I doubt Eomer would have had much Sindarin taught to him until he came to Edoras, so he wouldn't be familiar with the language yet)?

Update soon, I want to see how Eowyn is helped; and what Theodred does.

Author Reply: Thanks for reviewing Raksha!

There are no details - that I could find - regarding either Morwen (Eowyn & Eomer's maternal grandmother) or their paternal grandmother about when they died. Actually there is NO information at all about their grandparents on their father's side. Morwen still could have been alive because she would have only been in her early 80s and she was Dunedain. But, I think she returned to Gondor after her husband, Thengel, died and so she wouldn't have been there to help - not that she was motherly by all accounts. From what I remember reading she hated Rohan and didn't stay there. So in this story there are no grandmothers around to care for the children.

I'm going to email you about your other question because I have further questions about it. *grin*

So glad I happened on this! I quite enjoyed this introduction to the young Éomer and Éowyn and look forward to learning more about their early experiences in Edoras, and more about their kind older cousin, as well.

I live in a small town in Washington, too; nice to meet a 'neighbor' here!

Author Reply: Hello neighbor! I'm glad that you enjoyed this, thanks for leaving me a review.

Really nice start, Radbooks. This must have been very hard on Eomer and Eowyn, because in reality, the adults wanted to care for them, but it must have taken a while for real love and trust to grow. I look forward to seeing the brother and sister settle in.

Author Reply: Thanks, Daw. It would be devastating to lose both of your parents at such a young age and then to move to another place with people you barely knew would only make it worse. Theoden was doing the best he could in the situation - moving them to Edoras and caring for them - but that didn't make it any easier for Eomer and Eowyn. Fortunately, kids are amazingly resilient.
