I love your Theodred! He is obviously having to do a lot of rethinking about children in general, and his cousins in particular. It was so funny the way the kids started bickering--just like real life! Pentangle Author Reply: Thanks for reviewing, Pentangle! I'm glad you like Theodred, I'm not sure I quite have him yet, but it's close. *grin* It's been interesting trying to figure him out after mostly writing Aragorn and Dunedain characters. And, yes, kids will be kids! :)

Poor Theodred; he's not used to kids; and it's understandable that he'd rather go riding with his pals. But his intelligence and compassion show through here; he's adapting to the problem presented by the young orphans' discontent. I loved the bit about his using the same tones he uses on his horse to try to console Eowyn - it's very real for that culture (and others); someone used to calming skittish animals would have a gentle touch needed by an unhappy little girl. Looking forward to the next chapter! Author Reply: Thanks for reviewing, Raksha! Glad you liked the part about Theodred speaking to Eowyn as he would to his horse, it just seemed to fit him.

I have a sad and shallow confession. Movie!Theodred was so gorgeous (even dead) that I'm intrigued by him. I liked this glimpse of him with his cousins, and also his memory of their father as his first captain. Author Reply: Thanks for reviewing, daw! I agree that Movie Theodred WAS very, very good looking and when we watch the movie my friend and I often talk about him and wish we could have seen him alive and talking. :) I felt like there needed to be something to tie Theodred closer to the children, something besides the fact he was their cousin and I felt that it was reasonable that his uncle would have been his first captain.

And the loyalty between Eomer and Theodred is begun. Theodred is at least willing to open himself to the children, which is important. Author Reply: Thanks for reviewing, Larner! Yes, I'm sure that Eomer started looking up to Theodred right away in the manner that most young boys do to an older cousin or to some 'hero' that they know. And, Theodred is already beginning to feel protective towards both Eomer and Eowyn.

I like your portrayal of Theodred! He's picking his way carefully, which bodes well. I always feel sorry for him, getting cut down so early in his life, but this makes me feel like he got to experience some of the sweeter, more gentle parts of life than one might suppose. He seems a very nice young man. Looking forward to more! Author Reply: Thanks for reviewing the chapter, Elanor! I'm glad that you enjoy how I portray Theodred, it was fun trying to figure him out. I've always wanted to know more about him and he's one of those characters I wish Tolkien had written more about.

You made me feel for all three of them here, poor Theodred never having known a mother's love ! Author Reply: Thanks for reviewing the chapter, Linda. I had to put that part in about him never knowing his mother... it just seemed important to me to show that he'd never had that love... it was sad.

LOL @ Theodred having agreed to take them out riding the next day. Did he have any choice in the matter? :) I'm glad he's showing an interest in them and determined to help them. And no, I'm sure he hasn't seen the true Eowyn or Eomer just yet. It may take them some time to come out of their grief and be comfortable in their new home. Good chapter. Author Reply: Thanks, Misty! Theodred might have seen the true Eowyn and Eomer when they started talking about the horses... that might have brought them out of their grief. :) They are true Eorlingas after all!

Very nice chapter - a little difficult for Theodred, being he was so much older than these two 'new' cousins... I liked the puzzlement he is going through... should be a fun ride. Thanks for sharing it! Author Reply: Thanks again for reviewing, Agape! While I know Theodred would have been around children - sons and daughters of servants and friends - it's not the same as having them in your household and getting to see them up close and interacting with them on a personal level. I'm glad you're enjoying it.
