Growing Up Tales  by Baggins Babe 8 Review(s)

Hobbit Rangers! Whatever next?

Indeed! And while it saddens me to see the Hobbits have lost some of their innocence because of things that have happened in the past, it's a very good idea that they learn how to look out for themselves. Freddy makes an excellent Ranger: that was nicely done!
God bless,
Galadriel

I love this! Why shouldn't hobbits make good Rangers - they have an awful lot of the qualities needed. And seeing a Goatleaf defeated by a hobbit - poetic justice, that's what it is!!

Author Reply: Glad you like this - i think Hobbit Rangers would be a logical progression.

Yes, a charmless member of the Goatleaf clan being dealt with by Hobbits. Definitely poetic justice.

Sorry it took so long to reply - phone line was out for over a week!

Ah, it was fun to see the Hobbit Rangers in action! Erithain would have been proud, no doubt. I am glad he got to witness their oath.

Hmmm ... Goatleaf? Well, what could one expect, with *this* name? It runs in the family, obviously. He underestimated the Hobbits. And what is worse, kept them from two meals. A reason for harsh punishment, no doubt *grin*

Author Reply: I'm sure Erithain would have been very proud of the way his two young friends dealt with this.

Yes, what can one expect from someone called Goatleaf? Never underestimate hobbits - and don't keep them from their full compliment of meals either! Deserving of the greatest punishment, keeping a Took from his food!

I think hobbit Rangers is a perfect and highly logical development. After all, they already had the bounders. Loved this BB.

Author Reply: I'm so glad you think hobbit Rangers would be a logical development - particularly after meeting so many of the Dunedain. Glad you liked it.

I love it that 'iddle Freddy Took grew up to become a Ranger just like Erithain! And I do love the way that he and his cousin dealt with Goatleaf (any relation to the late unlamentable Harry?) I do adore it when hobbits deal with trouble in such a competent and no nonsense fashion!

Author Reply: 'iddle Fweddy just had to be a Ranger after spending all that time with Erithain! Glad you liked the way he and Torni dealt with Goatleaf (yes, he is a relation of the late and unlamented Harry!). I think hobbits would deal with trouble in a no-nonsense way - especially if they'd already missed two meals!

Hobbit Rangers!! I love it!! Wonderful, BB, wonderful! :-)

Author Reply: I figured Hobbit Rangers just had to happen one day, and I'm glad you enjoyed the story.

Wonderful BB!! BTW, you do know you now have to write out the story of Freddy swearing his oath in front of his Ranger Captain friend, right? I'll send Rufus to sleep on your head and tickle your nose w/his tail if you don't. :oD

Really a wonderful little vignette. :o)

Author Reply: What a terrifying threat! ;-)) I expect I shall get round to that story soon.
Glad you enjoyed this one though.

At the end of their training they were presented with their swords and a new cloak pin, designed by Frodo - the Star of Arnor above a gold and silver mallorn tree. The King himself came north to do the honours and was deeply moved and proud when they went on their knees before him and swore their oath of allegiance.

Oh wow, how awesome.

Glad you enjoyed. I thought they should have a different and distinctive cloak pin and I could just see the mallorn tree. And of course Strider had to be there for the oath-taking.
