An insightful look at the history behind this confrontation! If they could start with a clean slate (like Bilbo does) they'd be much more reasonable. After all, both Thorin and Bard are decent people (as you show - they are concerned about their people, not themselves personally). Author Reply: That's the scary thing about the whole conflict--everybody except Bilbo had just enough truth and justice on their side to lead them into some really bad choices. Thanks!

Each is right in his or her way; and each is wrong also. The coming of the orcs was the salvation of both sides, I think. That a Hobbit could show more integrity than Dwarves, Men, or Elves must have been humbling. Author Reply: I think this was a case where not knowing the history of the conflict was a very good thing. Only Bilbo believed that all of them would deal in good faith with a little incentive. Thanks!
