| Oh my, Larner. This is one of the most beautiful things I've ever read, I'm in tears. Not only are the voices of the individual characters clear and very moving, but the words themselves and rhythm echo Tolkien's poetry so well! I have always had a soft spot for Frodo and what he went though; and I don't think he could have been given a more fitting tribute. I'm going to have to bookmark this, and re-read it whenever I need to have my LotR-heartstrings tugged at. Thank you, for spending hours on it, and making it perfect. Thank you. | Wow, this is beautiful, Larner! I didn't know you wrote poetry. The different voices are nicely done. I especially like the double meaning of Sam's verse, how it fits with the others even though he's talking about Rivendell. I was going to read your newest but this caught my eye first... Author Reply: I don't do a good deal of poetry, as it takes me HOURS to get it right, I fear. I spent several hours on this one, in fact. Sam, Merry, and Pippin aren't aware of the gift offered Frodo, but recognize that he belongs with the Elves if he is to be able to know peace. That one comment Frodo made as they saw the green fire of the Elessar stone disappear behind them as they finally rode north into Arnor once more has ever stayed with me--the comments of the others that it was as if they were awakening from a dream while Frodo feels as if he's falling asleep once more. Obviously that parting was very difficult to him, as his relationship with Aragorn helped him feel fulfilled as nothing else did. Sam recognized that Frodo would have to go away and openly expected he would be retiring to Rivendell with Bilbo--yet at only 53 this is very young for a Hobbit to be considering such things. Nor would I think the rest who knew and loved Frodo best would remain totally unaware that he was thinking of slipping away. Certainly once they learned from Gandalf Frodo was leaving Middle Earth it appears that Pippin and Merry set off at all speed to catch up with him so they could bid him farewell, as if they realized it was necessary. I think all of them realized Frodo was beyond what the Shire could give him. And the lack of speaking as they traveled toward the Havens after the first joining with the Elves or as Frodo hugged the others goodbye speaks of Frodo's increasingly fragile nature as well. Anyway, thank you for the feedback. I doubt I'll write a great deal of poetry, but this one began insinuating its rhythms into my mind as I drove to work one evening, and this is what came out. | |

| These insights in the thoughts of others about Frodo are very well done, Larner. And I'm even more impressed because I myself am absolutely hopeless when it comes to poetry. Author Reply: Considering how long it took me to write this when it worked at my mind all the way to work, I certainly don't claim to be a poet, either. But these are the wishes I think these would have known. So glad you appreciated it. | |

| So don’t think to linger, sweet Frodo, our brother. Thy life, it’s now offered to thee. That was beautifully done, Larner! These last two lines reminded me of what Esme said in "Second Mum": "You have to be your own Frodo!" I'm glad that he accepted this gift and was able to live fully and in joy for a while! Thank you! Author Reply: Yes, the sentiment is the same. When the decision was made Frodo should go with Bilbo to Hobbiton she realized that before Frodo could be anyone else's, he needed to come to term with being his own person first; and here is a sort of plea from all that Frodo again find himself that he be better able to assist others to find themselves as well. | *tears* That is the most touching LOTR poem I've read in a long, long while. (Please tell me I'm wrong when I seem to recall you once saying in a reply to a review that you weren't a poet. I beg to differ, even if this did take a while! :)) Such beautiful verses that truly read as if they come straight from the hearts of those who loved Frodo best! the last line of Sam's verse got me teary-eyed. Took me hours to get right--I'm no Bilbo or Tolkien to just dash off poetry at any odd moment. Am so very glad you felt it was true to each individual or group, and these would love him dearly. | |

| This is very nice! There is a comforting feel to the rhythm of the scansion, and the repetition of the word brother, and even though it's not stated, I can easily tell in each stanza who the "speaker" is! Frodo was so loved, that those who loved him could set him free! Author Reply: I'm so glad you liked it, Dreamflower. This one presented itself to me as I drove to work last night, and took hours to get down and to do it properly. I am NOT a natural poet! And am so glad you could tell each "speaker." And, yes, they all loved him, and I'm certain deeply. | |

| Wonderful, dear Larner! Wonderful! Even Iluvatar Himself asking/begging him to come West. Love it all. :) I wonder if you would consider a sequel if that would be possible of Frodo responding to these individual entreaties. I'm going to have to put this on my website which at long last I hope to update next weekend - Go Out in Joy would be there also - if all right with you.
