| Dear Miss Dora (and Dreamflower,) I do think that this information on the Writing of Letters shall prove valuable, whether by the Shire Quick Post or the newfangled even-quicker-Post (such as these letters!) I am very grateful for how neatly it has all been laid out. Would it be Usual, if one needs Immediate Help with a Family Problem, to write a short note asking for a face to face Meeting as soon as Possible, and then to disclose the Particulars of the Matter in Person? | My dear Miss Dora, Thank you very Much for writing about the writing of Letters! I have used your Advice as much as possible in writing these Reviews for your Book. I hope that Dreamflower and yourself shall be Inspired to continue the Book, for I have enjoyed it on every reading. I have very much enjoyed our Correspondence so far as it goes. You are a very Intelligent and Perceptive Young Person! If I can draw my Scribe's Attention away from some of my Less Reputable Relations long enough, I am sure that I can convince her to Complete my Book of Manners! | How does one know if one is Sending Letters too Often? If the Replies one Receives match the Description above, then one may be Fairly Assured that one is sending Too Many Letters to that person. LOL!!! Dear Aunt Dora is Great! And always Polite :) I attended an English course this year and one important part was about (Business) Letter Writing. Now, with all those tips and tricks from my wonderful English teacher and your Aunt Dora, nothing can go wrong ;-) Although I prefer e-mail! It's much quicker. I'm quite sure, as a passionate letter writer Prof. Tolkien would have loved this chapter. Author Reply: Although I prefer e-mail! It's much quicker. Me too! | Ah yes, the wonderful Miss Dora. Letter writing was an art for her and those like her. I can certainly see her following her own advice if she had to write to Lobelia! Great chapter, Dreamflower! Author Reply: *snerk* I'm sure that her letters to Lobelia were very terse indeed; either that or she filled them with "firm" advice about Lobelia's rearing of Lotho and habits of "finding" spoons! | |

| Keeping up a Lively Correspondence with one’s Friends and Relations is an Amusing and Rewarding Activity. There is nothing More Pleasant than Receiving News from afar from one’s Loved Ones, and there is no Better Way to Receive Letters than to Send them! And who would know better than Aunt Dora! *g* I would love to hear her opinion of the decline in letter writing and the rise of e.mail etc! Author Reply: Aunt Dora says "There is no Reason a Letter sent by more New-fangled Means cannot be as Courteous and Gracious as Those sent by the Old-fashioned and Reliable Shire Post. If one Insists on Corresponding in That Manner, then one should do it Properly!" Also it enables one to increase one's circle of correspondents immensely! *wink* | |

| How very hobbity! (Now every time I add to Sam's packet of letters, I will be thinking of Dora...) I especially chuckled at this: The New Parents will have more than enough to do, after all. Is the inception of the Shire post a matter of record, or did you have to dig through the dust at the Mathom House to find your facts? Yours most cordially, Lin Author Reply: *chuckle* Indeed! She is pretty Practical about things, isn't she? But of course, that's one reason Family is so Important to hobbits! No, it's more or less my invention; the Took family tree does not go back past Isengrim II, but we do have a founding date (1083) for the Great Smials. So I just decided to go a couple of generations further. There had to be an Isumbras II somewhere along the line! I thought it would be fun to have had a previous Took-Brandybuck alliance (before Mirabella) and a very *smitten* Thain! *grin* | |

| One may see here that the Request is worded as a Question, and that it is not Taken For Granted that the Reply will be in the Affirmative. A Time and Day for both Arriving and Departing are given, as well as the Number of Persons in the Travelling Party. One hopes that Cousin Uffo will find the visit Congenial. I love Aunt Dora so much. She does everything in her Considerable Power to ensure that the Shirefolk are civil, responsible, and well in touch with their family and friends. :) Author Reply: *grin* It's a lot of fun to imagine the situations Dora is writing of; she's quite a font of Wisdom, isn't she? | |
