Oh, poor Fatty!

Author Reply: My heart really went out to Fatty. Not many remember the suffering he went through. He was a true and loyal friend!

Hobbits are such social beings that I do suspect that Fredegar suffered from the loss of contact with his friends almost as much as he did from lack of food.

Author Reply: Oh GW - that is profound... yes, the lack of food (and the hideous weight loss that told of it) was just the tip of the iceberg for a sociable Hobbit... so very sad... and then to see them going off again... just tripped a minor explosion in the poor Hobbit's mind.... and he's back in the Shire with the ruffians all about and stuck in the Lockholes!

So, you think that perhaps Freddy might have seen and secretly followed? But this time Frodo didn't return, although the rest did.

Poor Fatty.

Certainly Frodo was written as having suffered PTSD--and considering what he went through I'd be surprised if he didn't manifest it.

Author Reply: None can surpass the suffering of Frodo.... Sam was a close second, and then Merry & Pippin... for those of the Shire... but Fatty - first, he ran interference for Frodo and the rest of them at Crickhollow... then in the forefront of the rebellion in the Shire.... and then thrown into the Lockholes - the horror of it so incredible that he was almost unrecognizable when he was released....

I think, if he had seen them leave, he would have followed...
