The Tenant from Staddle  by Larner 6 Review(s)

Haven't been good about reviewing lately, for which I'm sorry, but I have been reading and enjoying.

The argument between Frodo and Barti was very well done - and I wonder if Frodo might have revealed so much about what happened precisely because he knew Barti was willing to believe the worst of him and he wanted to hear the condemnation coming from somewhere outside of himself for a change?

Author Reply: I suspect you're right about Frodo perhaps wanting confirmation he's not so wonderful after all. Sometimes we are so bent on personal ills it's a wonder we don't crawl all over everyone who disagrees with us. And I've certainly seen some individuals who WANT to believe everyone else is arguing with them. Heh!

It’s about time to drag me out of Hogwarts at the scruff of my neck and return to Middle-earth ...

Quite a difficult situation for Barti, to be pestered with questions he’s not allowed to answer. Well, at least after Frodo left the Shire and Sam and the others started telling stories, I suppose there’s no reason for him to keep his silence about what the Travellers did, and maybe he finds out the rest, as well.

And it seems we’re getting closer to the reason why Barti despises Frodo so much.

But honestly, when Frodo told Barti he was a coward, I wanted to shake some sense into him! Glad Sam overheard, but still, he didn’t tell Barti enough to help him to truly understand, I fear.

Oh, and I *finally* got the DVD and enjoyed it greatly! It was truly fun to watch! Thank you again!

Author Reply: I got my copy of HP last Saturday and had it finished about mid-afternoon Sunday. I, too, had a bit of a return to make. That about the Elder Wand and Wand-lore was fascinating, and I'm so glad they got Ollivander back.

Frodo isn't feeling well and is feeling terribly down on himself; and Barti's perhaps too ready to agree with Frodo's own self-perception, unfortunately.

And so glad you finally got to see Nanny McPhee ant to hear you enjoyed it so thoroughly. The daughter was watching it day before yesterday, and it was so fun to hear the part where the donkey dances for Auntie.

And so we begin to see how much Barti is being changed by this experience as soon as he reaches the Shire. And he is already spreading what information he can.

Sounds like Ricko might be another candidate for a wider world view. Glad that he is able to want the best for Persi.

Deadly dull? - that is an interesting reaction from a Shire Hobbit! Might have imagined that Ricko's reaction was that Barti would be glad to get back to ordinary life and routine now that this 'adventure' is over.

The children have really taken to the wider world, well Bree at least, very well and the relationships they have formed will benefit all concerned. Trust children though to let loose more than Barti might wish to tell.

I don't think that turning the conversation away from Frodo and the Travellers is going to work for too long. But then again, do it often enough and people will learn not to ask which will not be a good thing.

Hmm Bartolo does have a problem doesn't he? Having changed his opinion he now has to follow through. Although if he knew Frodo just a little better he wouldn't be quite so worried about his reaction. (May I revise that opinion now that I have read a little further!)

Umm, *licks lips* Ginger beer and pork pasties yes please!

Ooh the conversation between Barti and Frodo made my heart bleed for both of them. I am glad that it hasn't affected Persi's education though.

Good for Sam! But too little information to help Barti understand properly/

Looking forward to more as usual but responses may be delayed as I am going to my Parents to try and give both a bit of a rest!

Author Reply: The children are children, after all, particularly Lyssa and Ricki, and don't know to be circumspect, perhaps. So others begin learning more than they might. And we do have typical gossip behavior going here.

Poor Bartolo--he doesn't know what to believe now! Others say Frodo accomplished so much, and Frodo's saying he's a failure, and Barti doesn't have enough knowledge to appreciate why Frodo's saying what he did, so he takes him at his word. And both are hurt by their own perceptions and one another at this point. Nor will Sam allow others to belittle his beloved Mr. Frodo.

As for Persi--going to the Tooks will be a very different experience for him, and he's likely to find it both enlightening, broadening, and frustrating by turns.

Actually, I didn't particularly appreciate ginger beer when I tried it, not having grown up with it; but I could perhaps develop a taste for it. I do love lemon curd, after all.

And give my love to your folks and Jet.

Oh dear. Two steps forward, one back. It's not surprising Bartolo's opinion of Frodo can drop so quickly - it's not as if he found it easy to believe him heroic in the first place. And when the denial comes from the horse's mouth ... Perhaps Bartolo needs to consider that Frodo is clearly very fragile - and that he's good at seeing the worst in himself, even as he helps others.

Bartolo and Sam. Now that would be a confrontation and a half. If Sam chose to stand on his dignity and new rank, he could really make Barti squirm, for all his pig-headedness.

Author Reply: The horse's mouth indeed, without the benefit of knowing how holding the Ring damaged Frodo's self-esteem or understanding most of what Frodo says.

Frodo won't allow Sam to challenge Barti openly, but he's still going to give his own warning. He knows Frodo's true worth even if Frodo still denies it. And I love the idea of Sam making Barti squirm. Heh!

No coward indeed! Good for you, Sam, for standing up for your treasure. :) And as for you, Frodo, you stubborn Baggins, you didn't fail! I will take the Ring to Mordor and you did. Someone else had been set aside as Ring-destroyer. You were Ring-bearer. Smeagol died because it was his time, not because you cursed him. Oh, darling, you are a hero so many times over. You have taught me so much. You are my inspiration. Bracegriddle may not even like to think of you but I don't want to stop - no wonder I don't like him.

Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

Author Reply: Yes, the most Stubborn Baggins of all Stubborn Bagginses in his headache is putting himself down (remember that in a few days when he comes back for Midsummer itself it will be after the spider bite drains again), and seeing himself once more as a failure.

Barti has the facts laid out for him--"They know more than I do what I did--I don't remember a good deal of it myself..." He'll learn the full facts soon enough, I think. But until then Frodo's own words appear to condemn him. And Sam's not going to allow folks to upset his Master, particularly when he knows Frodo isn't feeling well to begin with.

Poor Barti! Frodo's "confession" confused him so much! Yet his years of prejudice were not easily overcome, and so it was not unlikely he'd take Frodo's words at face value.

Sam was rather restrained in his reaction--I'm sure he had a hunch what Frodo'd been saying. I also have a hunch it was a good thing neither Merry nor Pippin heard Barti's parting remark. (Remember Pip's reaction to "cock-a-whoop"?)

Author Reply: Still going on only partial information, Barti is. And he has a lot to learn about what Frodo truly did, or who the mysterious "he" is that Frodo speaks of.

I, too, suspect that Sam has some idea as to what went on between Frodo and Bartolo, particularly once he saw Frodo's face and put that together with the demand Frodo explain things to Persivo if he was brave enough. As for Pippin--he's already realized Barti's made Frodo very upset on a day when his head is aching abominably--had he heard Barti's demand he's likely have pulled out Trolls Bane and applied it to the Bracegirdle's posterior. Heh!
