| Sigh .... how I love your work, especially those with Celeborn and Galadriel. Such prickly wonderful characters. I've always personally wanted something a little easier for them 'cause reading about them apart hurts. But it's a testament to your writing that I continue to read with a huge lump in my throat but determined to finish. Bravo... and apologies for not reviewing sooner but better late than never. | |

| Wow. I read the old version on Marnie's site a while back. This is very, very different, unless my memory is utterly going. Maybe you could even put them up side by side - I think they're both very possible interpretations, and the contrast is very interesting. I must say I like this one more, though. The emotional tension between two very proud and very clever people - the hallmark of your C and G stories - is even greater here. The cameos of other people in their family is also interesting - I feel a bit sorry for Celebrian, having two such impossible parents! Does Celeborn speak to her at all during this time, I wonder, and what do they say? The tangled relationship between love, pride, power and forgiveness was compelling and very well shown - I loved it! Favourite lines were Celeborn's note- clever bastard. I have strawberries, indeed. Author Reply: This is very, very different Yes, it is. :D The only thing that is the same is the fact that he arrives in Valinor. One of the main reasons for me to rewrite this particular scene is that I feel differently about these two characters now, than I did when I wrote the original version. It is strange when that happens. The reunion of Celeborn with Galadriel had to be written in the backdrop of their parting, and it may not have been a parting that was either the bitterest, or the nicest. The old story did the same thing that the new version does - it just does it a little differently. ;) I'm intrigued, though, at your idea of putting thw two up side by side. Maybe because I wrote both, and have a certain idea of both characters in my head, I'm not entirely able to spot the different interpretations or the contrast. Who is to say that she isnt impossible herself? ;) Remarkably little has been written about Celebrian - i think the oddds that she may have been a handful to deal with are fairly high, if you consider who her parents are. Or maybe she was just very good at handling them. :) Does Celeborn speak to her at all during this time, I wonder, and what do they say? Hmmm, it could be another story. She certainly would have seen him before Galadriel did. :) As would quite a few people - his parents, maybe Elu, maybe even Finarfin. What possibilities! any more, please? I have a couple of C/G fics already up, if you havent read them - there's I Am Two Fools, and the recently-added Ten. Then there's the old Eloquent Remembrance, in which Celeborn meets Finarfin for the first time (this may not fall in line with this new version of Descent Into Eternity, although it did with the old one). My lj has one Galadriel and Thranduil ficbit, also, which isnt here. [just_sphinx at livejournal]. I havent written LOTR/Silm/C&G in a very, very, very long time. | Wow, I take a brief interlude (if four months can be considered brief) from the fandom and am just embarking on the daunting task of catching up and this is one of the first fics I read. I can only hope that the rest that follow can re-involve me so deeply into the murks and depths of Tolkien's world. It is hard to pick out any one thing that particularly stands out about this, because the whole thing was imbued with such energy and hidden passion that I can't pinpoint any particular instant that is more important than the rest. I think the first thing that struck me was Celeborn's initial reaction to ths new 'land'. His affinity for the forests and wildness that he has always known is clearly defined by his distinct unappreciation of Valinor. It is quite plain that he expects a certain uniformity in both climate and vegetation, and that it is not until he looks past his prejudice that he can appreciate its own unique beauty. I think this also mirrors his relations with Galadriel. There was obviously pain at their parting, and he is uncertain of what to expect in her. He is looking for change and seemingly determined to find it. I found the awkwardness between them painful and yet highly amusing. That these two highly regarded elves could easily look into the hearts and minds of others and yet not the one who is probably the most dear to them was very ironic. That said, I was very worught with them for inflicting and prolonguing each others' pain, and deeply glad when they kissed and made up. Oh, and special appreciation for the line that made me laugh out loud: " He tilted his head to one side, and raised an eyebrow. “Why is it that you are the only person who can compliment herself while appearing to praise another?” " That said, you'll no doubt tell me that I actually read and reviewed it when I first came out an just forgot, but if that is the case then it very definitely bears up to a second and third reading. Congratulations on making me see Galadriel as vulnerable, that is definitely not something I have considered before. Galadriel as vulnerable surprised you?? Actually, a lot of people have told me that. I suppose that many fics dont reallly look beyond her Prophetic! Queen! Frosty Nosed Noldo! attitude. ;) I tried to do that here, and I hope I didnt make a mess of it. But its great to see you. | Wow, Sphinx, you are brave - writing the Lord and Lady! I think they have a difficult 'voice' to grasp, but I think you have it here. A couple of things strike me about this piece: The first was Celeborn's defensive attitude as he walked along the beach. For him to leave Middle-Earth and admit his time there had ended had to be very difficult, and now he faces the 'unknown' of Aman (or Tol Eressea, or wherever he is). He has some bias against it, believing it all to be ordered and controlled, unlike his beloved land. His questioning, his unsureness, his bias - they come through well - as internal fears and weariness. We see them for what they are. The second is Galadriel. Why did I think they would not even use words, but instead wrap themselves around each other and hold on tight? Because that is what I wanted them to do. I think they did what might be more in line with their personalitites - they had dicker and argue first! Galadriel just sounded like Galadriel! I am so glad she sees his heart, his weariness, his tiredness. But oh, poor Celeborn - having now to go meet all the relatives! I was so glad when they finally kissed and hugged. I am so glad Celeborn is safely home - and that he can see it as 'home'. Author Reply: Writing both of them is always difficult, more so when the entire fic more or less revolves around their particularly complex relationship. I would call it weird, but then thats me. :) They've been together for so long....and I thought that their reunion would be all the more poignant for what was not voiced aloud, rather than what was. I was glad when they finally stopped bickering, and made up. Head was hurting by the end of it. Thanks! | |

| Ok, you know what i think of this! But i just had to tell you again. Amazing writing, such vivid, compelling language. Your descriptions of Valinor and Celeborn and Galadriel evoke beautiful images, and your portrayal of elves is brilliant. A fantastic look at a difficult reunion.
