You know, I really like when stories take into account the needs of animals, like horses. The way Tolkien writes it, and many other stories are like that, the pony is mainly just a conveyance, but the question of what it should eat and drink are very real all the time. Author Reply: I edited a fantasy trilogy some years back where the author wasn't all that familiar with horses and had the hero galloping for hours and miles and miles in the first draft of the first novel. We had a lovely discussion about how horses function in real life, and the author's rewrite incorporated their new understanding, with the result of strengthening the presentation and making the narrative much more realistic and believable. (That's one of the qualities I appreciate in well-written fic of any kind, including fanfic.) Fiction typically ignores certain bodily needs and functions, which makes me wonder sometimes... (For example, I've mentioned chamber pots and the combination of ewer-basin-wastewater bucket in some stories. I haven't gone so far as to describe such a thing as an outhouse, though it would be a logical assumption, at least in the Shire. IRL, I remember touring a castle that had a latrine built into one outer wall, where the bodily waste went into the moat... I wonder how Tolkien's various peoples handled such matters? Perhaps I am entirely too concrete and practical in my thinking. LOL.)

Lindelea! I love the growing trust between Bill and Aragorn. He is learning that not all Big Men are Bill Ferny. Hope this review finds you well, Mellon nin! ((hugs)) MM Author Reply: Bill is a very perceptive pony. He's been paying attention, and he's smart enough to notice the differences. ((hugs)) Stay well!

I printed this chapter out to take with me on the plane, and it was a very nice read--this one is quite atmospheric, and yet you still manage to make the POV very "pony-like". Soon they'll be encountering stone-trolls--I look forward to his reacttion to that!! Author Reply: LOL, it seems we are thinking along the same lines today... early this morning I was just contemplating Bill's reaction to the stone trolls. *g* Thanks! And welcome back!

Through Bill's thoughts, you have created a magnificent picture of the worry and weariness they all encounter as they make their slow way to Rivendell. I love how, despite his own hunger, fear, and exhaustion, Bill worries for his companions. I love scene in which Strider and Bill nod to one another. Bill is as ready to take care of his people as they are to care for him. Author Reply: Thank you, I appreciate your taking time to share your thoughts. You're right, Bill has thoroughly adopted these people as "his".

Ah, how wonderful! Dear Bill, and how he seeks to care for his small herd as they seek to care for him. And love the working in of the text. Author Reply: Thanks! It's a game to blend the text into the chapter seamlessly, and I hope it doesn't bother anyone that I do that.

Mention of Rivendell is like a flash of bright light, a sliver of sunlight shining through clouds Awwww. I love how they make sure Bill gets as much food as is available for him. Author Reply: Yes, I think they care for him as much as he does for them. Poor hobbits and hobbit-pony, the pickings are pretty slim at the moment.
