Winter Candles  by Raksha The Demon 7 Review(s)
BodkinReviewed Chapter: Prologue on 1/3/2008
I love the role reversal - even if Faramir was ready to head out into the dark to search for his missing ones, he was still the one at home and waiting. And his comment about his Rangers won't go unnoted, I suspect. Lots of shadows waiting to leap up and chill these two. But they will welcome the light - the candles as a symbol, and the confident and unfettered love of their child.

Author Reply: Eowyn and Faramir certainly do have shadows in their past; but I think it strengthens their bond; they understand certain things that others would not. Now they have their chance to savor the light; which isn't necessarily always as easy as it sounds, but they are enjoying most of it, and raising unshadowed children.

Thanx for reading and for the perceptive review, Bodkin.

Beware, Faramir of not being over protective of your wild Shieldmaiden!I loved fesity independent Eowyn here. Faramir sometimes cares too much, which is understandable. I'd choose the mint candle.

Author Reply: Thanx for the review; Linda. Faramir definitely cares a great deal for his wild Shieldmaiden, sometimes more than is reasonable, but that's love for you. Fortunately, Eowyn is no stranger to past sorrow; and trusts Faramir enough to share it with him; so that the days ahead will be all the brighter.

I never considered what a grim Yule that must have been for Eowyn, when her home was besieged by enemies from within and without. Later, she must have felt a strong need to re-establish the customs kept by her family. Faramir's worry about his wife and son is understandable if unnecessary. Someone going missing has a very sinister meaning to him--

When my Rangers were late to return to camp or the refuge, it often meant that they never would

It will take a while for him to become used to peaceful times.
A tender piece, beautifully written. Thank you for this Yuletide present. :)

Author Reply: I'm so glad you liked the story. Tolkien implied that Meduseld in the months before TTT was a grim and cheerless place, what with Orc-raids, Theoden's illness and Wormtongue's ascendancy. He described the place as shadowed, and Gandalf as bringing light.

Faramir and Eowyn both would have a strong need to establish new traditions and re-establish old ones in better days.

Thanx for the review!

I really enjoyed this! You really made the characters come alive! It was a great little story. Thanks for sharing it!

Author Reply: I'm glad that you liked the story. I can never get enough of Faramir stories, myself; and his marriage to Eowyn must have been an interesting one, with lots of ups and downs but always love. Thanx for reviewing!

Oh, how I love these candles, Raksha. And they ought to look lovely in the candlesticks Frodo commissioned from Celbrion for the Prince of Ithilien and his bride.

I love scented candles, and use them liberally at Christmas and Easter.

Author Reply: I love scented candles too - apple and pumpkin scents especially, but cinnamon is good too. I'm sure that Faramir and Eowyn would put Frodo's candlesticks in a place of honor in their home.

Thanks for reading and reviewing!

After all that Faramir has lost I can well understand his fears but there really is no taming this shield-maiden and Eowyn has her own 'demons' to lay to rest!

Author Reply:

Thanx for reading and reviewing, harrowcat. I think that Faramir felt better once he understood more of what drove Eowyn to be late; and Eowyn felt better knowing that Faramir would not only give her the freedom to make decisions about their household, but that he shared her desires in this case....
