| Merry is a wise young lad to know his cousin needs good memories of the river, and playful enough, with that vivid imagination of his, to help Frodo get over his fears. Esme is right about him and Bilbo being too stubborn for their own good. That Frodo still remains in Buckland is such a hardship to them both, but Frodo refuses to budge in his resolve. It’s a characteristic that will do him well on the Quest, but now he needs to humble himself and listen to Merry’s advice yet again to return home. | Oh, good for Merry! I can so easily believe that this Merry is the Merry who will grow up to follow Frodo anywhere, and who will take all care to plan for his cousin's protection and happiness! This is great! Author Reply: Yay! I'm glad, because that is the Merry I'm trying to capture. I got a comment somewhere else that my Merry is much more responsible and thoughtful than Tolkien's, which rather alarmed me. So I'm glad I'm not the only one who sees Merry as a sensible/good planning type. :) | |

| Merry frowned and thought hard. He didn’t know how to convince Frodo he was wrong about the other things, but there had to be some way he could help. “It seems to me that you would like the water more if you had some happier memories to think about when you were in it,” he said slowly.
