This was very sweet, and very imaginative. I loved Pip's constant obsession with seeing food in the form of clouds and the way Merry humoured him all the way through. The ending was especially well done and I enjoyed Pip finding proof of the hairless cat at last! Author Reply: I imagine that Pippin can see food in almost anything! Merry is a good older cousin, and even if he didn’t particularly want to go on this camping trip, he soon warmed up to it and realized that this would be a great adventure to share with Pippin. Now they can all go home and tell them that hairless cats, and oliphaunts, do really exist – not that anyone will believe them. ;)

When I was a teenager I belonged to 4H, and was in, among other things, the veterinary science project. We were required to do community service proects from time to time, and two years running we served as ring stewards for cat shows. Having seen hairless cats in real life, the description is SO realistic! I felt rather sorry for the poor things. And I can SO see just this situation coming up! And to find one in Minas Tirith! Heh! Author Reply: They are quite ugly, aren’t they? I’ve been spared seeing one in RL, but I can imagine if they look that bad on TV, they can’t be much better looking in RL. It is a bit of a stretch to find one in Minas Tirith. Whoever that soldier was who stole it away from the East must have a bit of hobbit stealth in him!

Now my holiday is complete. I am so glad you found the time to write! This is great fun all the way, from Saradoc getting involved in the camping to Frodo setting them up so that Merry had no choice but to go along. I love this: (Unfortunately, I fail to consider Bilbo’s presence and the influence he tends to have over my father. ) That is a very dangerous thing to forget, Merry! LOL Loved it from start to finish! Author Reply: Thanks, GW! Frodo will always be one step ahead of Merry, and Saradoc shows his own mischievous side, a little rusty for not being used in so long but still there, lol! It’s plain to see where Merry got it from. ;)

This was terrific--what a great story! And Merry's narrative is quite funny, and quite reasonable, too, in all its myriad details. A true slice of Shire life! I wondered as we went along if there WERE hairless cats in Middle-earth, and so I was very pleased to get to see one in the end! They aren't hugely attractive; I should think it would have reminded Frodo of Gollum! :) Author Reply: I don’t write in Merry’s POV often, but this story simply demanded it. He does have a knack at seeing the humor in every situation. I wasn’t sure myself if there were hairless cats in ME, until that final scene started nipping at me and wouldn’t leave me alone until I put it in! And Gollum isn’t *that* ugly! ;)

LOLOL! What a wild idea for a story, GF! That was so cute and funny--and I wonder if Bilbo and/or Frodo had anything to do with Pippin seeing the glowing eyes--if so, neither of them would *ever* admit it. I love Pippin's one-track mind. And poor Frodo, the subject of Aunt Esme's endless matchmaking schemes! Author Reply: I doubt very much Bilbo or Frodo has anything to do with the lights. Most likely, it was just some wild animal, such as a fox, like the one in “Three’s Company”, stopping to wonder what a bunch of hobbits were doing sleeping in the open. Esme figures she only has a few more years to get Frodo paired up with someone and that she just might see him more often if he becomes enamored with a lass from the Hall. Frodo knows better than to dissuade her at this point. He just grins and bears it as best he can.

“We need to go to town today to look for the hairless cats,” Pippin continues. “They won’t be at the river so we won’t be able to find them there. They’ll be in town, so we need to go with Frodo.” At least he has enough sense not to mention the sweets shop. Pippin does tend to get obsessed, doesn't he? I was as eager as he to find out if there were hairless cats to be found! It's great that the cousins were still together when Pip finally saw one. An adorable story. Author Reply: Pippin – he of the one-tracked mind. It doesn’t help that Merry so often indulges him. ;) I hadn’t planned on that final scene in Gondor. It starting taking shape as I was writing and kept nipping at me until I put it in. I’m glad the cousins were still together also.
