This was just lovely, the whole encounter from beginning to end! I'm so glad the Cat met Gandalf! And I'm pleased, too, so see that I was right, that Gandalf knows quite well what the Cat's been up to. How fine that he does not, in fact, disapprove. Gandalf understands that the Cat is helping Gondor. Two kindred spirits. This gentle, twinkly, but quietly powerful Gandalf is just right. I very much like the way you portray Gandalf's reaction to Denethor. I have always thought that Gandalf respected Denethor highly and himself felt thought the two had much in common as "terrible old men." And the relationship with Faramir - the Gandalf who here says "I would do naught to sunder him from his father" is the same person who reminds Faramir that his father does love him. I can just see the Cat stalking out, tail held high, on his dignity pretending it was his own idea to leave! Author Reply: Ah - thanks EW for the kind words about how I've written Gandalf. It's a difficult task for me - for I believe he contributed to Denethor's death, though in my heart of hearts, I know it's not true. However, I have grown to love the 'terrible old Steward' and wish his life were different. Many, many thanks for your kind words and review! The Cat also thanks you for noticing it was his... wait a moment! You said He pretended. He ask you, quite belligerently, to take that back!!!

I hope Alqualondë learns that the wizard isn't such a bad sort after all :-) I'm glad he is willing to keep an eye on Pippin as well. So good, Agape!! Author Reply: Right now, the cat is more concerned for his Steward... and a certain Hobbit. But he will keep an out out for the wizard... looking for shadiness and perhaps finding quality.....

A battle of wits between a cat and a Wizzard. What next? This tale gets better with every chapter. Pippin has a guardian cat and doesn't even know it. Tari Author Reply: Glad you're enjoying this! Thanks for the review...

This was definitely a necessary conversation--I liked seeing the unflappable Alqualonde flapped a bit by the Wizard's regard. It may have ticked him off a bit to have been "caught", but I think he's going to have a more open mind in regards to Gandalf now. And I'm glad Gandalf asked him to watch Pippin. Author Reply: *giggles* I don't think Alqualonde is very happy about being flapped... but if it amuses you, he will live with it!

Well, about time he realizes Gandalf is a special person also. And am glad the cat is willing to keep an eye on Pippin. Author Reply: I'm not sure how 'special' he considers Gandalf... but he is an open-minded cat and will consider all options....

An interesting conversation! Author Reply: Thank you! Strange where the muse will take you. I had no intention of writing this!

I bristled at that and he realized his mistake. “So, you have no master? Well, I can understand that.” He smiled. “I have no master myself, but that does not mean I do not serve.” My smile returned. A delightful 'conversation'! Author Reply: Thank you - I had no intention that the two would meet let alone speak. I started to write about the next day and the cat grabbed the keyboard and started typing. Go figure! As for that quote - it is based loosely on Gandalf's about him being a Steward... I liked that line. Glad you liked their little tête-à-tête; I'l tell Alqualonde!

Well of course Gandalf would be able to speak to Alqualondë and know what she was about. He is a Maia after all, even if in disguise. “I have no master myself, but that does not mean I do not serve.” Well, I'm not sure if that's strictly true, seeing as how he is one of Manwë's People. *grin* But I suspect he means he has no 'earthly' master and that would certainly be true. I'm enjoying this tale very much, Agape, (as what cat lover could resist?) and look forward to seeing how this all turns out. Author Reply: This cat had no intention, I thought, of even being seen by Gandalf... so I was surprised to see them meet! I'm sure he considers himself a servant of the Valar - but who on Middle-earth knows his true identity! Very glad to see you're enjoying this - however, I have no idea where the muse or the cat are taking me - I am betwixt two very powerful forces! LOL

I am still loving your portrayal of this cat with his difficult and mixed allegiances. Watered milk! Poor baby! Author Reply: Bless you and thank you for the review.... As for the watered milk - poor Pip comments about it in the book the next morning... and the paltry breakfast Gandalf brings him. I just loved it - and to think the cat got some of Pip's milk!
