A Cat in King Elessar's Court  by Agape4Gondor 10 Review(s)

That was lovely! I did like the way the realization of what had actually happened to Denethor came to the cat and how he then shared a look with Gandalf, but of them understanding the other. It was also interesting to see the cat's reaction to Aragorn in the rule of King. This story is so filled with entertaining moments!

Author Reply: I know the Cat, when he can let his feelings go, understands... but tell that to his heart as he watched his friend die.....

Gondor waited to long for a king... it is a difficult situation, but the Cat has eyes and saw and accepted, I think.....

The Cat is grateful that his small little contributions entertain you.

At last the Cat begins to understand. I hope that now he can heal, aided by Faramir, Aragorn and of course the hobbits. Perhaps he was slightly influenced by being in the same room as the palantir.

Hopefully he will also realise that Gandalf did not wish for Denethor's death and did what he could to prevent it.

Author Reply: Hi, Baggins Babe,

I was wondering whether or not the Cat had succumbed a bit to the Palantir. Nothing is impossible.

I don't know if the Cat will ever really accept Gandalf's part in Denethor's death, but he will ponder it long and hard. He is not a stupid cat.

Thanks for the review!

The light is beginning to find chinks in the cat's walls of defense :-)

Author Reply: Ah yes - and yet other things keep stuffing the blasted holes....

Well - we'll hope that the king's hands will help our little feline...

So, Alqua understands. Good. Although I am sure his coming to understand what happened to Denethor was extremely difficult for him.

Author Reply: Whether or not our dear Cat understands doesn't mean his heart is not broken.

The Cat in the hat -- no, in the tent has to endure great sorrows.Since I am no dedicated friend of Aragorn, I hope it will be Faramir to whom the Cat turns. After all, he is the son of the Cat's beloved master and knows himself a little something of the Palantir, therefore everything could stay nicely in the family.

Author Reply: *giggles* - at first I wondered if I had made a mistake in the title!!!

We'll have to see... let's keep our fingers crossed!

This Cat is truly a personage of great wisdom and insight. Now he understands the truth--that Denethor's madness was brought on by the Enemy.

I loved his observations of how Elessar handled the "Last Debate". It really wasn't much of a debate, there was no question that his will would be done, yet he did not co-erce any of them. They followed his will out of love and respect.

And perhaps, now that he understands, Alqualonde will begin to find his own healing.

Author Reply: Hi, Dreamflower *waves frantically*

You are absolutely right about the 'last' debate... and it is exactly what the Cat needed to see!

AH - everyone wants the Cat to begin healing but there is no time... not yet... for him nor for Faramir nor for Pippin.......

Oh my, such bitter and yet such important revelations. The entire world is shifting under Alqua's paws feet, and hopefully he can adjust to a new Age along with everyone else.

Author Reply: Wow - you've got that right, shirebound... It is a new Age - I wonder how the Cat will do......

Thanks for reviewing! Most appreciated.

I enjoyed this chapter very much as the cat discovers a wider perspective of the world.

Author Reply: Yes - I liked the fact, too, that he saw those who were perhaps deemed 'unsavory' characters in a new light. We'll see how he reacts when he truly meets an Elf face to face... *giggles*

I agree about Gandalf having been unable to properly reach Denethor at that horrible moment as he insisted on his own death. Poor Alqua--now the cat begins to understand just how much the Enemy had poisoned his beloved master. And he realizes Gandalf was doing the best he could to encourage the behavior that was truly needed, and that those here realize that none of them could wield the Ring. Now he understands that openness can be an effective strategy for rule. Now, can he truly be comforted?

Author Reply: I do so like the fact that he saw a different way of being leader... not that Denethor's was bad, mind you. Tolkien did use Denethor as a foil to make Aragorn look better... However, to the Cat's eye, Denethor is still the better man - at least for today.......... as his wish that Denethor had been there in the capacity of Steward... I was surprised that he wasn't thinking about Faramir instead.... but there is where his heart is...

Comfort? I don't know when - things are happening very quickly now....

Thanks for the review, Larner, most appreciated.

Hey Agape, I refuse to accept responsibility for your muse! LOL But I do appreciate seeing a new chapter about the Cat. Glad that he's beginning to understand that even if Gandalf had told Denethor about Rohan and all, it still was too late for the Steward. He was doomed. I hope someone besides Gandalf notices him in the tent and offers him comfort. Maybe one of the Elves? Because I can't imagine an Elf NOT noticiing a cat in their midst. *grin* Good read as always.

Author Reply: I believe, Fiondil, that the Elves noticed the Cat - and perhaps someone else too - but their good manners prevented them from bringing him to the forefront as he seemed to want to stay in the background...

I wonder if Aragorn told his brothers that the Cat can 'speak' - or if he even remembered, in the midst of the horror of the night of healing...
