Beregond!!! Amrothos! Lothíriel! Oh, and how nice to see Gloín again, too! That was roughly my inner voice while reading the first half of this chapter *g*. And I had to grin at this: who was clad in the grey and white livery of Ithilien It seems you, too, have a problem with having the White Company actually be dressed in complete white (unlike one of Mercedes Lackey's Heralds of Valdemar, if you know the books). It seems rather impractical, doesn't it? Especially in the wilds of Ithilien, or on the road through Rohan in this case. Should my muse at last, eventually, finally, deign to return to me, I intend to have an alternative to white as well in my "The Heart of a Knight". You wouldn't believe just how many permutations that uniform has been going through in my mind and in my drafts, even though I reckon it is going to make probably a very brief mention only. (And I can report that to my everlasting surprise, for the past week or so the muse has shown signs of life after years and years of leaving me hanging. But I will have to revise the previous chapters - thankfully only slightly - and immerse myself into the story again before I can continue...) But enough of me! Poor old hen-pecked Gloín - he is getting it from all sides: his king, his wife, his daughter (oh, and the idea of Gimli having a sister is just delicious) and his old friend! And what a nice little peek into a Dwarven community, and the mysterious feminine one at that. Author Reply: Yes, solid white uniforms don't exactly seem practical. Perhaps they do have solid white ones for "dress uniforms" or palace duty--but in the field? I never really understood the Valdemarian penchant for white on the Heralds--so impractical! (Though to Mercedes Lackey's credit, the characters mostly thought so too, even though they rarely tried to buck tradition, they complained about them a lot!) I am thrilled to hear your own muse is beginning to cooperate again. More new story is always something to rejoice about! Yay, something new for me to read! Yes, Gloin is indeed getting it from all sides--and I figured Bilbo would be the last straw! But I think he even knew himself that he was behaving badly; he just needed a few nudges.

It was nice to meet Lothiriel, and see what was going on with Beregond and Glóin. I did not expect to see them in this story! Beregond would be eager to see his son again, but he can be patient and wait for the morning. What’s one more day, right? Glóin has much to answer for and good bit of groveling to do. That he came to help with the reconstruction will show his determination to make things right, and I can’t see Gimli bearing a grudge for too long. Author Reply: I just had to show the new arrivals at least once before they arrived! And I'm glad the presence of Beregond and Gloin were surprises! Both fathers will be glad to be reunited with their sons--though I think you are right about the grovelling.

*sigh* I love a good romance, and this one is building up nicely. :-) The idea did cross my mind about what Gloin would think about the friendship between his son and an Elf. This is very interesting! I'm looking forward to Beregond and Bergil reuniting. :-) Author Reply: Well, I mentioned briefly in "A New Reckoning" that Legolas was not made quite so welcome at the Lonely Mountain as he should have been, so I decided to expand on that here a little. It seemed to me that it would be harder for the Dwarves who were imprisoned to forget their grudge. Father and son reunion--next chapter!

Now this is almost a Father's Day chapter! So much about father's and sons in this one and I do feel sorry for Beregond. It is not at all easy to wait when you want to see someone so very much. And poor Gloin! He has some amends to make. I love that Bilbo chose to write him of it. So like Bilbo. But this made me laugh, (Apparently the Elf had made an extremely favourable impression in the women’s quarters.) Doesn't the Elf always do well with the ladies? Reminded me of Legolas' reception in "A New Reckoning". hehehe Author Reply: Yes, I think I'm still all inspired by the Father's Day stories in the last GFIC challenge! Poor Beregond! He was used to leaving Bergil behind when he had duties to perform, but having Bergil leave him behind was a very different thing! Actually, I had Gimli's remarks in "Reckoning" in mind when I wrote that bit--and I was so surprised to learn that he had a sister! She just appeared out of nowhere--and I think she had a wee crush on poor old Leggy! (Which might explain some of Gloin's fury, LOL!)

*giggles* I can imagine Legolas making an impression on all the Dwarf ladies! So much so that Gloin's wife and daughter both took Gimli's side against him. All that Elfy charm no doubt! Let's hope Gloin manages to repair the rift. So sweet to see Beregond's fatherly love for his son. Bergil will have a lot to tell his father. I am loving this tale. Author Reply: Yes, poor Legolas just can't help it, can he? LOL! I'm looking forward to Beregond and Bergil's reunion, myself.

Ah, all the anticipation of this group! Author Reply: Yes, indeed! They are looking forward to seeing the others with varying degrees of anxiety!

Absence is making a number of hearts grow fonder. Stubborn, silly Dwarf! :) Author Reply: Yes, it does seem that way. Dwarves do tend to be a bit on the stubborn side, don't they?

Dear Beregond, he must have missed his son so terribly! No wonder he can’t wait to reach Edoras. Well, when they’re arriving in the morning, Bergil will have (nearly) all day to tell his father everything. The boy has so much to tell! As for Gloín ... it is very probable the survivors of the Battle of Five Armies still have hard feelings to the Elves, but Gloín behaved very badly nonetheless. Glad there are a few other Dwarves more sensible; I would hate Gimli to be sundered from his family and folk because of his friendship with Legolas. This will be an interesting reunion! Author Reply: Yes, Bergil will have quite a lot to tell him! I imagined in his letters home he would have been filled with excitement about all the new people and things he was seeing, and rather neglect to tell what he himself was doing. And I am sure he did not wish to worry his father about his mishap on the road home. I think that most of the Dwarves who were imprisoned by Thranduil might still have been harboring hard feelings--Dwarves are noted for remembering slights. But Gloin is an honorable Dwarf, and he will do the right thing.
