Actually, my view is that while Sauron in the second age was calculating, vindictive, but essentially in control of his emotions, by the third age he's utterly paranoid and insane. After all he's lost his fair body (in Numenor), his ring, and has had to regain his physical form by somehow feeding on the dead or their spirits. So he's probably not big on considered thought at this point.... | |
