| Oh...I never thought how that would appear to those not much involved in it, and I've never seen it written about through the eyes of others. But yes, of course it would be sad to this ordinary family; the beautiful and powerful Elves are passing away, and the small hero who saved the world with them. Author Reply: The last one and this one were written for different LOTR GenFic Community challenges. In this I was to look at Arda through the point of view of someone I'd not written before, so next thing I knew I'd found three who lived in the Dunedain community adjacent to the Grey Havens. They are seeing indeed the end of the Third Age, and will be among the last to know the Sailing of the Elves--and the Ringbearers. Thanks so for the comments. | |

| Interesting to watch the departure of the Ringbearers through the eyes of outsiders. These three mortals clearly felt that they watched something rather important. Somehow it was touching to know they were sad for the departure of the elves, even before they knew *who* was sailing. And they even saw the lights of being in Sam and Frodo! The farewell between the Hobbits made me sniffle again. (Oh well, no surprise at all ...) Though it was lovely that we could watch Frodo holding up the phial a little bit longer through the eyes of someone who was there. And it is wonderful that these three will remember this day for many years. How fitting that Gilboron thinks of Eärendil when he remembers Frodo’s eyes! Beautiful ficlet, Larner! Pssst - Elboron suddenly knew, recognizing what they must be from the stories You mean Gilboron. Sounds quite alike, doesn’t it? Author Reply: Thank you, Kitty. I would think that to realize that the Elves were leaving in increasing numbers would be difficult for those who have lived in proximity with them and who have profited personally from their teaching and assistance. And as these are more pure Dunedain than their distant kinsmen in the south, I'd think they'd be more likely to perceive the Light of Being. I am glad this has touched your heart. Thank you! | A lovely story of a sacred, heartbreaking event - love the Lights of Frodo and Sam flaring at that farewell kiss, Frodo's uncertainty at proceeding but going on, holding the phial aloft so his brothers could see him as long as possible or at least the light and know he was there holding it. How terrible that night must have been, but in its own way a holy night. I hadn't thought of it that way before but this story makes me think of it. Hantanyel!
