| Young and foolish he may have been but Pippin did truly grow to meet the threat. I think these chapters are wonderful - the Elf maiden sewing each cloak is so perfectly suited to make that particular one, and the language and imagery are beautiful. | My dear Pippin's cloak! How often he has been foolish by this point in the Quest, and he has a few yet ahead of him, but he does indeed grow to meet his challenges. | A youthful spirit who doubts whether he should have come? Yes, it must be our Peregrin. It does, indeed, also apply to all of them before the end. I believe that as Gandalf left the four to return by themselves to the Shire at the end of the quest, he said that they all had grown so that they could handle whatever awaited them there. Pippin began as the youngest, the one his cousins bossed about, even if lovingly. He ended by saving a guardsman, and a Steward, and rushing the Ruffians who challenged them and declaring HIMSELF to be the first of the new King's messengers! I would say the blessing worked!
