Again I see my need to read The Silmarillion and the other background material. This strikes a cord anyway, even though I don't know the characters except from glimpses. Author Reply: Another of the tragedies among the Elves. Feanor and Nerdanel had seven sons before he crafted the Silmarils. When Melkor stole them and killed his father Finwe, and had Ungoliant poison the two Trees for him, Feanor went mad and vowed to retrieve the great gems of Light at all costs. He convinced the Noldor Elves to follow him to the mortal lands to retrieve the gems, convinced that Valar were merely trying to control them and keep them subjugated. His sons joined in his vow, and it cost them everything. In the end Maglor alone was left alive, unable to return to the Undying Lands, and unable even to fulfill his father's vow as all three Silmarils were lost, one with his older brother Maedhros into a volcanic rift; one he'd tried to steal when they'd been won back by the Valar when it burned his hand and he cast it into the Sea; and the last one bound upon Earendil's brow as he sails as the morning and evening star. So Maglor continued wandering the shores of Middle Earth, sometimes playing upon his harp. He's one of the characters most written about from the Silmarillion.

(I have to confess the word "cookie" bothers me. I know it's in the prompt though, so no help for it.) Very melancholy. Got to tell you, at first I read "for love or money" as "for love or monkey" and thought that was how you worked that challenging word in. How are you doing? Snow or ice there? We have very icy snow, and heavy wind at the moment. shiver Our internet keeps going out, and the phone's been out all day. Author Reply: I know--biscuit is the proper word for Tolkien, but gotta go with what is there. And monkey and violin are often difficult to work in, too, for some reason. But that you read "love of monkey"? Oh, that is funny! We had about six inches of snow, and it's icy here where I work. Compact snow at home. Roads are bare and well sanded, and the Taurus does have studded snow tires, so I'm not too worried. Although Olivia works well with her front-wheel drive. Once I get the headlight replaced I'll be able to drive Olivia again until we can get the transmission functioning properly on the Taurus. Can't get a name for the Taurus--keep thinking "Linda," not that Linda has good connotations associated with it. No problems with power, thank heavens and knock on wood! Most of the lines have been replaced to within a mile of my house--wish they'd get that last mile done, as then I'll finally be able to get cable and DSL, supposedly! Dialup is frustrating! Anyway, thanks so! Supposed to be wind here tonight--we've had some all day long. A light additional dusting of snow this afternoon--now to see what the coming night brings. Poignant beyond words, Larner. Nerdanel must have wanted to die a thousand deaths at what her husaband and children did, especially at Alqualondë. Beautifully written with a flow that was almost musical. One of your best. Author Reply: I strongly believe you are right, Fiondil--it must have been difficult for her indeed. Thank you so. Am so glad you feel it is that good. My first love is surrounding the time of the quest, of course; but now and then I do dip into other times. Thank you2

sniffles Now where did I put the hankies? You know I have a soft spot for Maglor, but I feel even more sorry for Nerdanel. Btw, does your muse take bribes? If so, I am sure I can come up with lots of virtual bribes to allow him/her to keep you nicely supplied with material for _Stirring Rings_. How about virtual homemade chocolate chip and walnut cookies? Virtual florentines? Virtual saffron buns? Virtual cloudberries and cream? Anything to keep the words flowing.... Author Reply: My muse is ADHD, I swear, and I never know what to expect from her next! I have so many nuzguls and plotbunnies running around it's sometimes difficult even to move! Heh! Take bribes? Best keep the chocolate chip and walnut cookies away from her, or she'll take off after Hobbits in the kitchen for certain! Have the next chapter for "The Tenant from Staddle" in the works now, but she's having too much fun with a dance in Dol Amroth at the moment to let me get it done. But the next chapters of both I hope will be posted by or shortly after Christmas, I hope. As for Maglor and Nerdanel--this time she came up with a sad one, I admit. Thanks so for the comments.

That would indeed be a grief - the same so many other mothers have felt through the ages - to remember an innocent child grown to terrible adult and wondering where it all went wrong. Namarie, God bless, Antane :) Author Reply: Oh, I agree. To lose all seven of her sons to their father's grief and fury inspired oath must have been horrible! And then to learn what it brought them to, not only in Aman but throughout Middle Earth as well--it must have made it worse! Thanks so, Antane.

Still hanging in there I see! I often wonder what happened to Maglor, is he still roaming Middle Earth greiving for what his fathers Oath forced on him and his brothers, or is he at peace in Aman? More please, Lynda Author Reply: Yes, managed another day of it. As for Maglor--have seen a variety of stories about him--in a monastery, in New York, on a steamship out of London.... I like to think he did finally manage to get at least to Tol Eressea, but just how I haven't posted as yet.... Thanks so, Lynda.

Ah yes - over what Fëanor and his sons did it is so easy to forget Nerdanel. It must have been a terrible time for her, knowing what her family did and how much grief they caused. But I look forward to your promised happy end in 'Stirring Rings' for Maglor :) Hope to catch up on that one during the holidays, as I don't have much time before. Btw, will not be online much the next days, if at all, as I have friends visiting, so reviews might take until next weekend! And now I have an urgent appointment with my vacuum cleaner sigh' Author Reply:* Nerdanel lost so much when Melkor killed Finwe and stole the Silmarils! And I agree with your ideas of how much grief and anger she herself must have felt. Now, to get the next chapter of "The Tenant" finished and posted, then get the next chapter of "Stirring Rings" after that! Heh! And have a wonderful holiday season!
