Awww. I always did wonder about this; I thought it would be rather silly of Rosie to not at least ask where he'd been. =) I like this version. Author Reply: There was so much that needed to be covered at the end of the book, that little moments like this got overlooked. Good for us, else we'd have nothing to write about! ;) Thanks for reading!

Ah! So THAT'S what happened to Sam's hat! Nicely done. And they do need to understand at least some. Sam is recovering, but Frodo doesn't--not quite. And they need this time together to find themselves with each other. Nicely gentle! Author Reply: Indeed. ;) I do see that as being the most likely place his beloved hat would have been lost. Not that anyone is grieving its loss! Yes, they do need to understand, or at least be told. They won't ever be able to truly understand, but knowledge of what happened can help them to begin accepting the changes that they see and begin to know each other again. Thanks for reading!

That was a really nice gap-filler, and I have to agree with Periantari that there are not enough of them about Sam and Rose! Thanks! Author Reply: There does need to be more fics about Sam and Rosie. Tolkien equates their love as equal to Aragorn and Arwen, and that's saying quite a lot about our two gentle Hobbits. Thanks for reading!

What a great story to have an appropriate gap-filler dialogue between Rosie and Sam-- i think those stories are really missing from fandom. I'm glad you got to explain about the missing hat and i really enjoyed the description of the difference of Sam's Quest pre and post-Quest-- that is a very subtle thing to add but i'm glad you added this detail. Nice fic! I need to read your Yule fic too. :) Author Reply: Thank you Peri! Rosie and Sam would have had this talk at some point, you just know it. The changes in Sam are so obvious in the last few chapters of the book, and while we saw those changes happen, they would seem rather abrupt to Rosie and the others. They need their time to talk and get to know each other again. I thin the Quest would have changed Sam physically as well and it's the most immediate way of seeing those inner changes. It would just make Sam seem all the more foreign to them. Thanks for reading!

I love it! Sam is right to fear telling Rose all the darkness in the winter - even Gandalf wanted until morning to tell Frodo about the Ring - and I love that part and how Rose notices that they've all changed. But what is just so adorable and innocent is that all Rose is worried about it is that hat - very typical of a lass - and how healing for Sam to laugh about it! Very well done! Now he has to tell Frodo so Frodo can laugh. :) Namarie, God bless, Antane :) Author Reply: Rosie worked hard on that hat. And after all, Sam did manage to keep hold of his cookware even into the heart of Mordor! :P It's much longer to wait for spring than morning though, so Rosie insisted and she was right to do so. Better to get it out right away. I'm sure Frodo will get a good laugh from this. :D Thanks for reading!

That was so hobbity and so wonderful. I loved Rose's insistance that someone could have found the hat and kept up with it but I really liked this line, "I need to know, so that I’ll know you again,” Rosie persisted." I think that is just about perfect in describing how she must have felt when he returned. Now you have me wondering if somewhere they is a well dressed barrow wright in Sam's hat or perhaps Tom is keeping it in case Sam ever returns for it. LOL Author Reply: Rosie probably should have sewn the hat onto Sam's travel cloak! Not that it would have done any good. She'll just have to get busy making him another one - hopefully one more closely resembling a wizard's hat. ;) Sam and Rosie both need to relearn each other. They would have changed much during their year apart, though they wouldn't notice it for themselves. Rosie probably didn't even blink over how quickly she packed that picnic. I think everyone else is silently happy that the hat disappeared into the barrows. lol! I think Tom would keep it for himself, or maybe give it to Fatty Lumpkin. ;)

Beautiful! This is marvelous, GF. I love Sam's practicality in the face of Rosie's asking about his hat--just the kind of thing a lass would think of, too! I'd love to see Rosie's half of the conversation, when she tells Sam about what happened to her and her family in the Shire. Somehow, I can imagine Sam feeling even worse over that, even though none of it was not his fault. I also loved the silent conversation with Frodo. These two don't really need words anymore. Author Reply: LOL! Rosie must be credited for waiting so long to ask this especially pressing question. At least she won't be tempted to march off the barrows to get the hat back! She'll just have to make Sam another one. ;) Sam would feel bad about everything they went through, but I don't know that he'd feel guilty about it. There was nothing he could do to stop it, and he would realized that had he stayed, he would have just been another hobbit in the ruffians' clutches. They don't need words; just a look is enough to tell them all they need to know.

Wonderful GF. Like a boil that needs lancing the Tale needed telling. I loved the phrase that she needed to hear in order to begin to know him again and that he realises that there is more than just his story to tell. Author Reply: Sam must have seemed vastly different to his friends and family, and they didn't have the benefit of seeing those changes slowly take place as we did. OTOH, Rosie and those left behind have endured as well. They both need to relearn each other. Thanks for reading!
