| I've always wondered how Bilbo and Aragorn became friends and I greatly enjoyed reading your version of it! This chapter was both fun and heartwarming - you and Cairistiona will manage to turn me into a hobbit fan in the end! ;-) I really loved your Bilbo and his reaction to hearing the story of Aragorn's life. I also enjoyed Elrond fussing about Aragorn in the beginning (I really can't blame Aragorn for secretly enjoying to be fussed over). I always love scenes that show Elrond's fatherly love for his adopted son. :) I can't imagine how moved Aragorn must have been upon hearing Bilbo's poem for the first time (and Bilbo is right, it describes him to a tee). Bilbo's advice made me laugh! I guess a dragon must be about the only evil creature Aragorn managed to avoid meeting. *g* Author Reply: I'm so thrilled you enjoyed this chapter as it was one of my favourites to write. I love Aragorn and Bilbo together in those short glimpses we get in the Hall of Fire and at the Council of Elrond. Theirs, on the surface, is an unlikely friendship but I'm sure it might have been very genuine for Bilbo to have written that poem. I too like to see Elrond caring for his foster son so there was a lot of personal gratification in this chapter! Thank you so much for your lovely review. | |

| This is utterly wonderful! You have captured Bilbo beautifully, and I find this particular version of the beginnings of his friendship with Aragorn utterly believable and genuinely touching! He's such a wonderful character, I so wanted to do him justice. Those few lines on FOTR don't give us much to go on but I feel sure there was a great friendship here between these two very different heroes. | |

| Wow, you got Bilbo down very well! (And it's been a while since I've read those parts of The Hobbit, but am I right in thinking he gave Aragorn the 1st edition version of the riddle contest? I wonder if that will hinder in the future?) I loved the initial mutual astonishment that both of them knew some sort of form of Elvish, and the cooperation in translating instantly reminded me of Bilbo's poem about Earendil in the Hall of Fire. These two had a lot in common in Rivendell and I was glad to read of them getting on so well--and of Bilbo's slowly learning who exactly this Man is. Given Bilbo's reluctance to speak about what actually happened, I didn't think he would come out with the true version just like that. And Bilbo helping Aragorn with that poem was exactly the reason I thought he might have helped out with translations now and then. Well spotted! | |

| I agree with Shirebound, this is so perfectly in character for both Bilbo and Aragorn. I love reading tales about their growing friendship and it provided a very plausible explanation of how the poem came to be written. I enjoyed seeing Aragorn being chrished and looked after by Elrond and I'm glad he was able to have a good rest, although it is a shame he had to fall down a mountain first! | What a delightful story! I really enjoyed seeing Aragorn being pampered, cared for, and cherished by everyone in Rivendell because that's how I've always imagined things. I've always imagined that whenever he could spare some time away from his responsabilities and cares, he would go to Rivendell to rest and relax. And I loved the way you brought that to life in your story. I was sorry for Aragorn's plight and found Elrond's concern, and loving care really consonant with what Tolkien tells us about his love for Aragorn. I especially enjoyed that part in which Aragorn and Elrond recall Aragorn's disgruntlement at missing the wizard and the hobbit twice when he was ten. It sounded most lifelike. Your Bilbo sounds indeed most Bilboish, and Aragorn going to Rivendell to meet him is very credible indeed. Besides, throughout the story you feel Aragorn and Bilbo's friendship and respect for each other grow gradually so that the ending is very fitting and very moving. I do like to give Aragorn a break now and then and being both injured AND trapped by blizzards meant he had plenty of time to chat to Bilbo!
