| Oh yes, the library of Imladris has to be the place to find pretty much every historical detail written down. I'm a bit envious of Merry - I'd so love to be there and read all these books! Merry is right, the Hobbits are still a bit too insular. Never thought the ban of Men the best solution - it reinforces for most Hobbits that they don't have to deal with or care for the outside world, so they're not prepared for anything happening outside that may concern them, too. At least I see the Elves have learned the most important thing about Hobbits - their mealtimes :D Author Reply: I imagine that Merry is having a lovely time in the library--probably nearly so lovely as Frodo or Bilbo! And his concerns are valid ones--he knows that the Shire needs to remember that they have friends as well as enemies outside their bounds. LOL! Yes, and I'm sure that's one thing they look forward to when hobbits visit! | |

| Lovely! Merry is always so profound in his thoughts and it's something that I truly adore in him. I'd love to see you write more of his Post-Ring Rivendell "adventures". :-) Author Reply: Sorry to be so late in answering this one! Somehow I missed seeing it until today! | Glad to see that Celeborn and the Twins have adopted elevenses! Strawberry tarts? Mmmm! Another lovely look at one of our beloved hobbits and I love Merry's concern to see the Shire's history preserved. As an archivist and local history officer I entirely agree with him! Author Reply: Well, according to the Prologue and the Appendices, Merry had a lot to do with writing out some of that history! I'm sure that they did whenever they had hobbit guests at Rivendell! | |

| Lovely! This seems to link in so well with Celeritas' story about Kira and the Red Book of Westmarch. The importance of remembering is certainly to be taken very seriously. For some reason, the image that stuck with me is that of Merry wearing spectacles. Somehow it is very fitting. ;-) Author Reply: I'm sure that part of the reason the theme resonated with me for this request was the thoughts that came from reading Celeritas' story It had not occured to me before I actually wrote it down, that Merry wore spectacles when he got older--and yet once it did, I thought "Of course!" | |

| Absolutely lovely! Here I was reading the first sober and somewhat distressing paragraphs, and I began to wish that Pippin would show up, and... he did! Thanks! Really, I could not imagine Merry making such a journey without Pippin, nor Pippin allowing Merry to spend too much time amid the dusty records while they were there! | |

| There's nothing that can't be improved by strawberry tarts. :) I enjoyed this glimpse of Merry and his spectacles, poring over the library in Rivendell and getting all the kinks and aches that come from constant research and writing. Author Reply: Strawberry tarts are a wonderful cure-all! *grin* As a scribe and calligrapher, I know only too well the "kinks and aches" from writing things out by hand! | |

| Ah, you and I have seen so much of the same truth here--that Elrond and his sons have kept far more records of the doings of Hobbits than the Hobbits themselves, and that Sam, Merry, and Pippin all followed Frodo in seeking to keep that connection open that the Shire not forget! Wonderful ending, and so very Hobbity! Author Reply: It seems pretty clear to me that Rivendell was a haven for the remnants of the Northern Kingdoms--and that would have included any records they wished to preserve. Merry compiling the Tale of Years is canon; I just decided to put it into context. And we know that Pippin gathered records at the Great Smials, and that Sam completed and passed on, the Red Book. Thanks! A light ending seemed appropriate. | |
