starts breathing again Now that was a narrow escape whenever I saw one! When the Witch-king of Angmar showed up, the only thing that still gave me hope was knowing that this wasn't the last chapter and that this story isn't marked as AU. ;-) I really don't want to imagine what would have happened to Aragorn had he not been able to escape. I wish help and a safe place to rest wouldn't be so far away from him now. //“They will come on you in the wild, in some dark place where there is no help. Do you wish them to find you? They are terrible.” The hobbits looked at him, and saw with surprise that his face was drawn as if in pain, and his hands clenched the arms of his chair.// Reading that part always chilled me, but I also wanted to know what he was talking about and what had happened to him when he encountered the Nazugl (or at least one of them) before. I very much enjoyed your version of that encounter! :) Author Reply: Thank you so much! I had a difficult time deciding where and when that encounter with the Nazgul should have taken place. I suspect it actually happened earlier in Aragorn's life but I needed 'deadly perils' and, with Minas Morgul just around the corner, this seemed to fit the bill. As you say, nothing too bad could happen or it would have been AU. I'm so glad you enjoyed it though.

Oh my, that was very, very intense. I almost despaired too, despite the fact that I knew that you will find a way to get him out of there. But he is still far from any help… Hopefully he can catch some rabbits and find some taters in Ithilien… Just a side-note: I think that Uruk-hai were bred a bit later in Isengard Author Reply: I'm so glad this story drew you in. It was by far the most difficult chapter to write in terms of how hard I made this for Aragorn but, of course, I was always going to have him triumphing over his situation. He wouldn't be our hero if he didn't! Yes, Saruman's Uruk-hai only appeared in the Ring War, but Sauron's, which is what these were, had been around for over 500 years. [See Appendix A 'The Stewards'.]

Wow, it's been a while since I've reviewed!!! Your writing in this chapter has a great immediacy to it, and the sheer terror of being confronted by one of the Nazgul (much less interrogated!) and being unable to do anything, even curl up into a ball and cry, was incredibly well-handled. You sure know how to put our favorite Ranger through the wringer! Author Reply: Hi Celeritas, nice to see you back! Thanks for your review, I'm glad it all seemed convincing but this is definitely the very worst I would ever put him through. Poor guy!

As you pointed out, he still has a long way to go and hard odds to face before he's out of trouble for the moment--if the muse strikes you, I'd quite like to hear how that plays out! "Yes I feel very mean not to provide any comfort after all that hurt!" And some relief wouldn't hurt either! Thank you for sharing your stories. Author Reply: Thank you so much for leaving a review, nb. The next chapter picks up not long after this with the capture of Gollum though I'm afraid there are still hard times ahead for Aragorn. He will at least find some help on his long journey to Mirkwood.

An all too plausible first encounter between him and the Nazgul! I'm shivering along with him! Author Reply: I'm so glad you found it plausible, Larner. I hadn't long read up on Osanwe-kenta when I wrote this and was very concerned to get the mental invasion right. Thank you for reviewing.

I imagine this was a hard chapter to write. It was a hard chapter to read too. You've made it all sound so real, I was really, really grieving for Aragorn. I felt so worried and sorry for his ordeal. The details of his capture and confrontation with The Witch King made his struggle feel very immediate, and very painful to witness as it should be. They also highlighted Aragorn's strenght of mind . That and the fact that he ultimately withstood WIKI, remained firm and managed to escape made me very, very happy. That's our Aragorn. The ending is very lifelike and moving, and the details of the odds Aragorn had to overcome again enhanced Aragorn's will, strenght of mind and determination. Well I can't say I delighted in reading this chapter, because, as you know, I'm that weird kind of person who delights in reading chapters in which Aragorn is happy. On the other hand, I liked this chapter very much because it draws a great picture of Aragorn's inner strenght enabling him to overcome immesurable odds. That's something we unfortunately hardly ever get to see portrayed in fan fictions. And I'm really glad you showed us that. Author Reply: Thank you so much, Estelcontar for your lovely review. In writing this I was very keen to try and keep the physical suffering at a realistic level. The most hardy of men he might be, but Aragorn is not superman. You are quite right though that it how he overcomes his ordeals and finds the strength to carry on that is one of the factors that makes him such a great hero. I too will feel much better when he's had a square meal and some TLC!

What an experience. How he must have respected Frodo for what he endured on the road to Rivendell. Author Reply: Thank you so much for reading, Shirebound; I would certainly have forgiven you for missing this chapter out! 'How he must have respected Frodo for what he endured on the road to Rivendell.' Absolutely, my thoughts entirely. And I'm sure the whole experience at Weathertop was as awful for Aragorn as it was for the hobbits.
