| What a wonderful chapter. I love your description of Glorfindel and his horse was a nice addition. Author Reply: It was both fun and intimidating to write Glorfindel. | A conversation between Bill and Asfaloth. Outstanding! Bill got just the kind of encouragement he needed. Obviously he was not used to horses being kind to him. | Oh, lovely! There were so many beautiful word-pictures in this chapter, but my favorites of all were the exchanges between Bill and Asfaloth. "That one is mine," made tears come to my eyes. My thanks and commendations to you - this is the best version of Bill's point of view I've read yet! Author Reply: Thank you! It's been fun to try to see things from a pony's perspective. I'm still working out how he got back to Bree after the encounter with the "snakes" though. JRRT didn't give much to work with, there! | |

| Oooh! I've been waiting for this meeting and it didn't disappoint. I loved that Asfaloth was so Elven - the light, his manner - bit like a four-footed Glorfindel really! :-) I loved Bill's distinctions between Frodo and Sam. A beautiful look at Bill and Asfaloth, and how typical that the horse should acknowledge the pony's courage. Author Reply: a four-footed Glorfindel--I like that picture! Surely one such as Glorfindel would ride an exceptional horse... Yes, the horse acknowledging the pony sort of makes a parallel to the Big Folks' deference to Frodo, not that I'm saying Bill is a picture of Frodo. Hmmm. Humble bearer of burden, well, perhaps there's more of a parallel than I first thought. Good insight. Thanks! | |

| What a lovely encounter, Lindelea! And now we know more about Asfaloth: that he is as gracious and caring as his Elf. A humble pony from Bree, especially one formerly owned by Bill Ferny, could never have imagined being treated with such respect! | At last, poor Bill has someone to talk to and confide in. I love the Elvishness of the Elven steed--your Asfaloth is not merely a horse that belongs to an Elf, but he has an Elven air about him as well. His concern for Bill, and his praise of Bill's courage was lovely. And of course, he knows his own Master will be putting Bill's The Master (I also love Bill's distinction between Frodo and Sam) on his own back. But I am sure that Bill will not hold it against him. Author Reply: Oh, good, I was hoping that Elven air would come out and wasn't just knocking around in my brain. Ah, yes, "mine" and "The Master". | Ah, this meeting is wonderful, and so needed at that moment. And love Asfaloth's conversation with Bill, and how even this humble pony has fallen under the spell of love and loyalty borne by Frodo Baggins! Beautiful, Lindelea! Author Reply: Well, I fell under Frodo's spell decades ago, on my first full reading of FOTR, when he stood up to the Witch King, so it's no wonder to me that Bill would do the same. It has been a relief to reach this point of the story. A few difficult bits to get over yet, before Rivendell, but we're making our way there at our best pony's pace. Thanks! | |
