I love how much you can fit into a few words. And I love Halbarad's incredulity over this "skinny, shaggy-haired lad," and how he quickly reconsiders his initial judgment. Not to mention the image of a young, lanky Aragorn is so, SO endearing. And then, of course, there's Halbard's reaction to their First Eye-Contact. *happy sigh* I'm a total sucker for first meeting scenes. (And, why YES, you are the "lucky" first author to be spammed because of my leave-more-reviews intention for the year. I really don't thank my favorite authors nearly enough by saying something. Bad Nef will do better. ^^) Author Reply: Hee hee! I don't mind a bit being spammed by reviews! We likes review spam, we does, preciousssssss! And yes, do let authors know what you thought... as a writer yourself, you know how amazing that feels, after all. Very good New Year's resolution. *g* And now to reply to all of them and do a little review-reply spamming of my own: Thank you! Soooo glad you liked this. It was one of my earliest attempts at writing Halbarad, so when I do finally get my longer stories of Halbarad's younger days finished, this drabble doesn't really fit what my universe developed into, but hey, that's the fun of writing... ideas evolve! What hasn't changed, though, is Halbarad's at-first-sight evaluation of Aragorn as very special.

This was just beautiful. I love the glimpse of foresight and the words Aragorn would later use to Frodo. Author Reply: Thank you, Linda! I'm glad you liked this. You touched on my favorite part, actually, the words Aragorn later used. Not to steal anything away from Aragorn's eloquence but I thought it might be interesting to think that those words might have been part of the pledge the Dunedain use when they join the Grey Company and swear fealty to their Chieftain. Those are the kind of details Tolkien left unsaid, and that I love to speculate about. Thanks for the review!

That was so sweet! I loved how Halbarad's perception of Aragorn changed completely once he had looked into his eyes. His first impression of his new chieftain made me smile. ;-) Almut Author Reply: Thank you, Almut! I'm glad you liked this. I imagine Aragorn probably made a pretty good first impression wherever he went. Except maybe to Breelanders and suspicious hobbits. ;)

A wonderful glimpse into this part of Aragorn's life. Being only a little older than he in this piece, I can only imagine his insecurity standing there at the entrance to a new life among people he doesn't know. He is probably very much aware of what everyone expects of him - can he fulfill it at the age of 20? Halbarad was great and imo very in character for a man coming from a people that is focused on mere survival but still has retained the perceptiveness and wisdom of their fathers. Dour-handed ranger indeed. I especially loved him showing emption once he realises what this man may become. Very well done. Author Reply: Thank you, Vilwarin! I agree with you on that... he probably did have a lot of poise but you still have to think there were insecurities as well. This was a big change he was facing, and he was largely untested at this point. I'm glad you liked this, and liked my take on how Halbarad may have acted and felt.
Raksha The Demon | Reviewed Chapter: 1 on 2/24/2009 |
A lovely look at Halbarad's first acquaintance with his long-lost lord. Being Dunedain, he can see the king in the gangling shaggy-haired boy. This must have been when teenaged Aragorn rode out first with Elladan and Elrohir, right, with Aragorn about 16, before his meeting with Arwen? Author Reply: Thanks, Raksha! Glad you liked this. Aragorn was actually in his early 20s here, since he knew his true name. I always pictured Aragorn not as a fully developed man when he came to the Dunedain... strong and capable, yes, and honed some from time in the Wild, and that sort of 20-going-on-150 innate wisdom and poise in his eyes, but still with quite a bit of youth to his frame, hence the gangly detail. I think of men I've known at 20, especially tall ones, and it can be a bit longer before they reach the full musculature (and sometimes even height) of manhood. I think a Numenorean like Aragorn might be even a bit slower to develop physically than a "regular" man. He does, after all, have centuries to go yet. ;) Thanks again!

A very moving drabble indeed. It must have been a joyous day to the Dúnedain when Aragorn returned to them. And you've captured that very wonderfully with Halbarad's reaction. Author Reply: Thanks, Estelcontar! I'm glad you liked this... and yes, joy surely must have nigh exploded in Halbarad, and in all of them. It's hard to really imagine but fun to try.

I like this. What a fun, yet poigniant, limpse into the moment when hallbarad met Aragorn. I like how you illustrated Aragorn as being young, gangly, and hardly more than a boy. But I also liked whn Hallbarad looked into his eyes and "knew". Very well done! Author Reply: Thank you, Roisin! I figured Aragorn probably still didn't have quite the full measure of his growth at this point, even though he was 20. I look at my nephews, who of course are *not* Numenorean, and at 20 they still have a gangly look about them. I figured Aragorn might as well.

That was wonderful! I too felt tears, funny that such a small piece of work can evode such strong emotions. Hugs The Imp Author Reply: Thank you, Imp! I'm so glad it moved you to tears, wow. I'm glad you think I fully captured the import of that moment.
