Ah, the pivotal moment. Saruman's reasoning is all too understandable, but he's left his original mission far behind. What is prudent is not always what is right. Author Reply: You have nailed it so succinctly! Indeed! Thanks!

No, you must NOT! That can only be Saruman, I think. Gandalf might have the same power, but first, he was more sensible, and second, 'benighted land' sounds so much more like Saruman. Author Reply: Yes, Saruman indeed. Gandalf has far less hubris than to believe that he has the personal power to outmatch Sauron by himself, and appreciates what he would become should he allow himself to become caught by the Ring. And that "benighted land" sounds as much like Saruman to me as it does to you! Heh!

Whose POV is this? Author Reply: It might have been the POV of Gandalf, were Gandalf that self-delusional; but in this case it's Saruman.

That's a scary thought! First I thought this was an AU of Gandalf, but it's Saruman, isn't it? Scary in any case and a tragic loss of a being created for light and good. Namarie, God bless, Antane :) Author Reply: It could as easily have been Gandalf! Yes, this is Saruman but could have been anyone of immense personal power. Thanks so, Antane.

And I find a voice crying in the back of my brain, "No, don't!" Author Reply: As do I, Lin! Thanks!

*shivers* As a matter of fact, I felt this could be either Saruman or Gandalf. Perhaps a moment of weakness on Gandalf's part (a little pride sneaking in) and then a moment of truth - and realization that he cannot take it. And then Saruman - could their have been a moment of true self-sacrifice? Hmmm I doubt it. Nicely chilling - either way. Author Reply: It COULD have been Gandalf--yes. And you're definitely right, chilling either way!

This was truly chilling! Author Reply: Oh, I'm honored that you do, Linda! Thank you so! It was interesting to try to put myself again in the head of Saruman.
