Wow. That is sad...very sad. And I read this right after having reread Denethor's madness and death in ROTK. I've often wondered what would have happened if he lived. I don't see much hope, though, he was going fast as it was, but maybe Aragorn, the Healer, could have helped him. Author Reply: The question, of course, is, would Denethor have accepted healing at Aragorn's hand? Or would his now cancerous pride have held him aloof even had Aragorn come in time? It's a hard thing to predict. Thanks so.

oo how interesting! The last line is chilling. Author Reply: I wish that the two of them had not become estranged like this. One day I'd like to do a long story of Aragorn's time as Thorongil, but not right now.

It is so sad that this potential friendship never came to pass.At least the next generation made amends. Author Reply: That is so true--a friendship begun and lost now, begun and lasting later. Thanks so, Linda.

Well, Denethor wasn't incredibly keen to hold him to his promise, either... Author Reply: Yes, it does work both ways, doesn't it, Celeritas? Thanks!

Denethor and Faramir are opposites in some ways - in this particular way, how they see and treat Aragorn. It would be a bittersweet memory when Faramir so completely and immediately pledges his love to Aragorn when Denethor so completely rejected such a closeness, but as time went on, the sweetness would grow more than the bitter. Namarie, God bless, Antane :) Author Reply: So similar, and yet so different, and mostly because of how each chooses when faced with the same person. Thanks so, Antane.

Very well done. But for Denethor's suspicion, these two could have been good friends. Author Reply: Thank you. Yes, I think they could have indeed been excellent friends if Denethor had not given way to his jealousy for his future as the Ruling Steward.

Alas, that was a friendship doomed to failure, wasn't it. Nice glimpse of the promising beginnings of it, and the bitterness of its eventual outcome. Author Reply: Unfortunately, that's the way it proved. Thanks so, Cairistiona.

He made it 'Home' in the end, but not with Denethor. More please, Lynda Author Reply: Ah, yes. But Denethor lost his chance to see that which had not been seen in Gondor for so long--the great Elves who yet dwelt in the remains of the northern realm.

That was a promise that *had* to be broken; I doubt it would have done any good to take Denethor to Imladris. But Aragorn made good on that promise, sort of, through Denethor's sons. Author Reply: Yes, the sons were able to see what the father rejected. And his younger son became more than Steward of Gondor in the end!
