Touching. Author Reply: Thank you. I'd think he'd love such a place!

Aw, a beautiful memory of the violets, against the backdrop of such a tragedy. Author Reply: Yes, good memories and bad ones--we all have them.

That was beautifully written and a happy moment for Frodo to remember. And it reminded me of something I read a while ago. I did a little research and found it in "Second Mum", where Frodo brought home a buch of those violets for Esme. It tells a lot about Frodo's love for his aunt that he gave her those. It's like showing her his secret hiding place, which she actually found later on. Author Reply: I was not the first to imagine Frodo bringing violets to Esmeralda--I can't remember precisely whose story I first read it in--perhaps Lindelea's or Baylor's or Dreamflower's. Certainly I love their delicate aroma and beauty myself, and find it far pleasanter than lavender. But the idea of them being a means of showing her his secret place--that is beautiful! Thank you! Certainly she realized the meaning the dingle had for him once she found it. Thank you so!

Ah, yes, Frodo must have had an eye for such imagery if he's responsible for the many gems that show up in LotR... Nice and evocative. Author Reply: Frodo obviously had a love of beauty, and undoubtedly it started early. I wrote the dingle into "Second Mum," and have a feeling Frodo found refuge there from the stresses of Brandy Hall.

I'm glad he has good memories too - and he would have many from loving Merry and all the fun they had too. Namarie, God bless, Antane :) Author Reply: I think he had many good memories; but for one with an eye for beauty such a place would undoubtedly enchant him.

That's a lovely memory. Frodo really has the eye of an artist when it comes to the beauty of nature. Author Reply: Oh, how I agree with you, Kitty. Thank you!

Well, he does find butterflies again on Tol Eressea, maybe not the Crickhollow ones but beautiful ones none the less! More please, Lynda Author Reply: Yes, I think he'd appreciate most butterflies, in fact. Thanks, Lynda.

Ah, yes, the violets are in bloom, and that delicate scent... the wee hobbits bring them to me by the handful. A lovely memory, wistful, as so many childhood memories are. Author Reply: Yes, it's beginning to be that time of year indeed. Am so glad this rings true for you!

That is Frodo, remembering flowers, butterflies and beauty - very elvish. At the same time it is very sad that his HAPPIEST memory of his Buckland years does not involve any loved ones. Very well done. Author Reply: Alas, this memory is rather sensory in nature--as you said, very Elvish. I suspect he'd also consider the birth of Merry one of his happiest memories as well, of course. But I think that this one just caught at his awareness in answer to the question. Thanks so, Ainu-Yavanna.
