Trotter  by Dreamflower 12 Review(s)

/If I showed my face at Brandy Hall, news would quickly be sent to the Thain by the new Master of Buckland, Marmadoc Brandybuck. I had met him a time or two, and I had no doubt he would find a way to detain me until my father should fetch me home. His folk, I had heard by way of gossip, were already calling him “the Masterful”. No, I had no wish to encounter him./

*chuckles* Ah, Dreamflower, I can just imagine! I do wonder what it would have been like if our Trotter-to-be *had* encountered Marmadoc? One never knows...

A fine chapter filled with the mention of sheep. (the occasional hill being grazed by sheep on my left,) Who could ask for more. It sounds as if this young Took is about to find danger on his way to Bree. I liked Polly. He should have spent the night.

Author Reply: *grin* Can't slip any sheep past you, can I?

Yes, well, danger is an unfortunate but necessary ingredient to an adventure!

And I liked Polly a lot myself. She just jumped out at me as he rode along, and said, "I need that hobbit to get my goose over the stile", and I said, "Yes ma'am" very meekly.

"and I wish that I had listened to her"...famous last words! I can smell the adventure now...probably not a good one for Hildifons, but *I'm* going to enjoy reading about it. ;-)

Author Reply: No, not all his adventures will be good ones. But some of them will be...

*grin*

What a lovely visit with a kindly stranger. Hildifons will learn quickly, I'm sure, when to take advice from people and when to ignore it.

Author Reply: I wanted very much for Hildifons to have a "positive" experience with Big Folk before he has a more negative experience.

And he really should have listened to her!

I love cliffhangers! :)

Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

Ah, what a wonderful gammer! So very hobbity (and gammerly) in her conversation, and I love that HIldifons goes into her family tree a bit. Very hobbity of him. How many people today would take the trouble to memorise the names of a new acquaintance's grands? Will it stand him in good stead when he reaches Bree?

(But will he reach Bree? I wish he'd stopped for the night!)

Author Reply: *grin* Of course a hobbit will take interest in a new acquaintance's family tree!

He probably wishes that as well.

Aha--at least his first experience with Men is with a gentle person who actually cares for his welfare! I find I like Mistress Polly, and love his reaction to the differences and similarities he sees between her home and a Hobbit house.

Very nice!

Author Reply: It was very important to me that his first experience be a positive one.

I really did not know much about her, until she came out of nowhere with her flock of geese. Now she's got a whole backstory, LOL! And I wanted him to see that Big Folk were not all that different from hobbits!

Ooh, that last sentence! Good for Hildifons to have that nice initial experience, but I think he's a wee bit naive when it comes to the Barrows...

Author Reply: I did want his first experience with a Big Person to be a positive one!

Naive? Oh yes...in fact, he's quite naive about everything beyond the Bounds...

Why didn't he listen to the old woman? She's the one who knows about the barrows, not Hildifons!

And I think you are right when you say that Hildifons was more innocent and trustful than Frodo when he started his journey. The fact that the first member of the race of men he met was a nice old gammer didn't alter his attitude in the least.

I'm really curious to find out what will happen at the Barrow Downs! On the other hand I fear for the poor hobbit.

Author Reply: Well, he was impatient to be on his way--and he probably thought he was still too near the Shire for comfort.

We shall soon see what will happen!

Ooo, what a great last line for this chapter!

I'm glad Hildefons' first encounter with big people was a pleasant one. Of course, he should have been wary: of evil men, of the barrows, of the many dangers of the wild; but then, this is long before four adventurous hobbits learned so much about the dangers of the world. He's as innocent as Frodo was when he first set out.

Author Reply: In some ways, he's even *more* innocent! Frodo, at least, had Bilbo's experiences drilled into him, so he was not *totally* clueless! Of course, his adventure was much darker, but at least he knew that there *were* dangers!
