Trotter  by Dreamflower 10 Review(s)

"Who are you Rangers?"

Blunt and to the point! LOL! Miss Dora would not quite approve, I think (But then, she's not born yet, else I think she'd disapprove of this whole Adventure!)

Oh, I like the way in which Trotter got his name. Very entertaining! I also love that he has managed to amaze the men with his hunting. Loved it when he was able to connect their story of their beginnings with his friend, Gandalf.

Author Reply: I've always imagined Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin having to trot to keep up with Aragorn.

I just love to let the hobbits show off their accuracy of aim and skills at throwing! And I was sure that sometimes Gandalf had told stories to the children of his dear friend Gerontius.

Awww! I loved how the Rangers made Hildif--Trotter feel welcome among them. Making a hobbit-sized bed and adding a coat peg was a wonderful gesture. Trotter is keeping up with his new found friends as well. Another lovely chapter!

Author Reply: Yes, he's found some great new friends! I'm so glad you like this!

Appropriate that the Rangers would give Hildifons his nickname. I too am dismayed to think that he might eventually leave the Ranger home, and yet we know already that he will. At least he has seen the good in people, as well as the bad, and he has hopefully learned something from the Rangers about tracking and where and when to travel. Hopefully, that will keep him safe for a while.

Author Reply: Since I imagine that it was hobbits that may have given a few of the Rangers their nicknames, it would be appropriate to have it the other way around for a change!

He's got a lot of adventure ahead of him yet!

Great explanation for the name, his having to trot to keep up with all those longshanked Big Folk! (Though I hope the wooden shoes will make an appearance as well, if only in Bree where the folk can come up with their own explanations for names already given.)

Can't wait till the next is posted!

Author Reply: *grin* I liked it! And yes, the wooden shoes will eventually make their appearance, for that was also part of what charmed me with the "original" Trotter...

I hope to get back to it now that The Cake is out of the way, both ficwise and in RL!

Good for Trotter, showing Hobbit marksmanship! A born Ranger, I think. And now he's got a Ranger name!

Author Reply: A born Ranger, I think.

*grin*

So that's how he got his name! Very nice.

I would have liked to see the surprised look on Stark's face when he realised that Trotter had hunted down those birds with nothing else but two stones.
Hobbits are amazing :)

Author Reply: Yes, it is!

*grin* Yes, I am sure he was quite surprised. Trotter's stone throwing will become legendary among the Rangers, I think!

I could not imagine the old Thain's son growing up in complete ignorance of the outer world, and am glad he remembers where he heard the tale before. And nice how he was granted his new name--much nicer than a Hobbit having to wear wooden shoes! Heh!

Love the hunt and how the Rangers begin to learn of the capabilities of Hobbits. And the idea of him having had to watch his bow made fun of and broken like that--I'd like to strangle the fools myself!

Author Reply: I couldn't imagine it either. With Gandalf being Gerontius' good friend, it only seems to make sense that they would have heard some stories from him!

Yes, the Rangers are beginning to learn a bit more about what hobbits can do!

I can't imagine the Ruffians doing anything else. They'd find the idea that a toy-sized bow could be of any use to be highly amusing. (Although many decades later, other Ruffians would learn just how deadly a Tookish bow could be.)

I love the way you are constructing this entire history of Trotter!

Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

Author Reply: Thank you! It is quite fun to figure out how the course of his life must have gone!

I enjoyed this chapter very much, I liked how Trotter suprised Stark with the way he could hunt with rocks, Hobbits are so useful you know. Will be waiting for the next chapter of this most interesting tale. Hugs The Imp

Author Reply: I don't suppose the Men were used to seeing hunting done with nothing but a thrown rock!

Hobbits are indeed quite useful, as Trotter is making sure the Rangers know.
