Trotter  by Dreamflower 9 Review(s)

Ah, Two Rivers! So *this* is where I got the name!

You know, our conception of Two Rivers/Taduin, the Rangers' chief dwelling place, is rather different, but the location is the same! I'm glad you reminded me where on the map I'd put it...silly of me, Dreamflower, but your Dear Miss Dora's Dear Miss Kaylee is *horrible* at geography! Hoarwell and Bruinen, that's right!

I would almost think Atto Fiondil inspired this re-read, so I could make sure of my route for our dear Faran...hmm...

Oh, I like the language lessons and the way you describe the differences in the twins as Trotter perceives them. I am also glad that Trotter got some understanding for his lost love troubles. Lovely chapter!

Author Reply: Well, I thought he'd need to begin to learn Sindarin sooner or later, and who better than one of the twins!

He really did need to talk about it to someone, and Dirhael was young enough himself to be understanding, and unlike Hildifons' parents, he had no interest in thinking of it as "just a crush". (They'd have been hoping he'd "get over it".) He did his small friend the favor of believing him when he said he really love her.

That's what I need - someone who will teach me Sindarin and Quenya! Lucky Trotter!

Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

Finally got to it! Took me long enough!

So, Arador married his son's inlaws to one another, eh? Interesting! And also interesting to learn Dirhael's nickname of "Poet." Nice!

And like how he begins making he distinctions between the twins!

The Poet is Dirhael! Yes, that Dirhael! *squee*

*cough*

Sorry, just had to get that out of my system. So sad that Trotter can't find it in him to love anyone else... sad and unfortunately realistic, especially for hobbits.

Author Reply: Yes, he is indeed *THAT* Dirhael! I really wanted badly for it to be him, and after consultation with a few other people over the ages of the Dunedain and doing some math, I finally was pleased to be sure that it was possible for it to be him!

"sad and unfortunately realistic, especially for hobbits"

I am sure that there were adolescent crushes and infatuations, but I think in JRRT's world it was a true thing that true love would only come around once. He certainly indicated that hobbits were very faithful in their marriages and did not remarry often when widowed.

I loved Trotter's reaction to Elvish as a beautiful language - and he shows his smarts and adventurous spirit by beginning to learn it. And Dirhael wants to get home to Ivorwen - awww, we rarely, if ever, glimpse this couple as kids in fanfic.

Interesting idea that hobbits love only once, however that love is treated.

Author Reply: I knew he'd have to begin to learn soon enough, and his first contact with Elves (okay, I know, Peredhel; but so far as Trotter is concerned, Elves) would be a good time for him to begin.

I am far enough back that these two would be quite young--just come of age, in fact! So it will be fun to include some of their story within Trotter's!

JRRT indicated in "Letters" that hobbits formed very serious attachments to their mates, rarely ever re-marrying after being widowed, and often pining away afterwards. I think that indicated to me, that like Elves, they loved for life. And it occurred to me to wonder what would happen if that love was ever unrequited? It might explain the several unattached hobbits on the Family Trees.

"Do you mean to tell me Elves have more than one language?" I was astonished at this revelation. "Why do they need more than one? And what are the others? Do you speak them? And when did you learn Westron? Do you suppose I could learn this Sindarin? Would I need to learn the others too?"

LOL!!! He's definitely a Took ;-)

And now that Elladan and Elrohir are Trotter's teachers I'm quite sure they will have many stories to tell about him to a certain hobbit many years later.

I'm glad that Trotter finally found out that speaking about a problem always helps, no matter how big the problem seems to be. It must have cost him quite an effort, but it was worth it!

Author Reply: Yes, he definitely is! I don't necessarily think *all* of Gerontius' children and descendants had his bump of curiousity, but I do think several of them did, and Hildifons *must* have been such a one!

I think Bilbo will question them quite a lot!

It was worth it. He needed to confide in *someone*!

I liked the picture it went very well with your descriptions od the rivers and the village the Rangers lived in. I feel bad for Trotter that he gave his heart to that less than worthy Gardenia more like wilted flower if you ask me.LOL! Hugs The Imp

Author Reply: Thanks! I had the motte-and-bailey construction in my mind for a while, as logical for a Ranger village. It was lovely to find that picture when I googled!

Well, of course, if Gardenia had been worthy of him, we would never have had his story! ((hugs back))

Two Rivers sounds lovely. I'm sure that Trotter will enjoy his time there. I'm glad that he was finally able to find someone to pour his heart to. He needed to unburden himself and his sleep has already improved for it. And he's learning Elvish? What fun! I loved all his questions - he definitely shares many qualities with a certain later relation of his. ;)

Author Reply: Yes, he did need to unburden his heart, and Dirhael is close enough to him in maturity (I'm envisioning him here as only about 21 or 22, while Trotter at 33 is at about the same level) that it would feel natural to confide in him, as he might not to an older ranger like Arador.

Well, he'd have to start learning sometime! It's as well to make it early on...

*grin* Yes, that Tookish streak is very strong in him, isn't it?
