Trotter  by Dreamflower 8 Review(s)

I bet Thorn was not happy about starting school - having Trotter there must have made things so much easier! And, five years later, having to leave Trotter behind must have been so difficult for poor Thorn. I can see both of them took that parting badly :(

Gandalf! I wonder what he will have to say about all of this? And I like the fact that they send the children off to live among the elves for a time. Anyone could benefit from that sort of arrangement!

Author Reply: As I was researching the Appendices for this story, I was surprised to see that Aragorn was not the first of Isildur's heirs to spend time among the Elves! However, I don't think the others went there as young as he did. I remembered the medieval custom of fosterage: depending on the area, sometime between the age of seven and twelve, children, especially boys, were sent off to live with someone else-- usually distant family or friends who were higher in status. It usually lasted about seven or eight years. The idea was to give the child some educational advantanges, and to strengthen the ties between the families.

I figure that Elrond wanted to maintain his ties with Elros' descendants, and Isildur's heirs were glad to keep the good will of the Master of Imladris.

Sorry that I've gotten so far behind here. But love Arathorn running out to hug Trotter, and that Trotter is able to take care of those ruffians all by himself and by hobbit means also.

Namarie, God bless, Antane :)

Author Reply: Don't fret-- I really got in a rush the last few chapters!

Arathorn would have been so glad to see his best friend again!

I could never imagine Hildifons ever trying to learn to use a sword the way Merry and Pippin did. But his skill at archery and at stone-throwing would have made it quite possible for him to defend himself anyway.

Trotter proves to be a stealthy scout and a bit of a warrior to his fellow rangers. He certainly is enjoying his time with his new "family" - thinking little of his own. He seems to have found a good fit for himself amongst the Dunedain, though he would do best to believe the stories of the Enemy, now that he has seen some of His agents.

Author Reply: He is not thinking of his own family much-- and when he does, he just keeps on thinking "someday" and "maybe next year" and "not quite yet". He thinks he has all the time in the world...

I liked this description of how Trotter fit in with the Rangers--especially his getting a swelled head after dealing with those ruffians!

And Gandalf shows up. This should be good.

Yay! Gandalf is back! I knew he would return sooner or later. But if you asked him, he would doubtlessly say: Just at the right moment ;-)

We'll find out if he's right!

I liked the description of the different rangers and their special names. They are a practical lot, aren't they?

And, of course, I enjoyed that very special moment when Trotter caught four ruffians all by himself! I'm very proud of him!

What a wonderful service he's given--Ranger, scout, cook, tutor--he is truly a well-rounded person. And I must suppose that with Elladan and Elrohir came Gandalf? Gotta be!

Love these years! And love that Tolkien's "Trotter" is perhaps getting a "real" basis in Shire history!

Love it!

Author Reply: He's simply putting into practice many of the things hobbits do in their own homes-- perhaps, except for the scouting. Yes, Gandalf has found him, as you will soon see!

I've loved the idea of Trotter the Hobbit Ranger since I first encountered him, but I just could not wrap my mind around an entire AU in which he replaces Aragorn/Strider completely. And I had also always been curious about Hildifons as well. This seemed like a chance to explore what a hobbit could have done among the Rangers, without having to re-write the entire Ring War!

Well, well you didn't give me time to review the chapter I just read before you popped out another(not that I'm complaining. LOL!) I like to umm... mull them around you know like fine wine before I review. I'd say Trotter is a really brave little fellow and so useful to have around, he does everything from cooking to fighting and more! Can I borrow him?? I can't wait to see if he'll get invited to Rivendale maybe... Hugs The Imp

Author Reply: I will be popping out several more chapters over the next few days! I only have until Tuesday to finish, according the rules of Finish-a-thon!

Trotter really is a useful little fellow; I think hobbits in general like to be of help to others, according to what is said of them in the Prologue, and in the story of Gandalf's involvement with them.
