Poor Hildifons. He hoped no other hobbit ever faced a decision like that. Foreshadowing. :( *hugs Bilbo...and Frodo*

I like the way Hildifons' story makes Bilbo reflect upon his own life and his own writing. They are connected but they are still very different. Bilbo did still have a choice even after all he'd been through. Hildifons was not as lucky.

Foreshadowing. I love it. *wibble* Author Reply: *wibbles with you* One of the more brilliant and fun things about writing fanfiction is that it takes very few words-- the merest allusion-- to evoke an emotional response from the reader. It's one way in which original fic is at a disadvantage, as the subtleties available to a fanfic writer aren't there.

Alas another hobbit did have to face that. An interesting chapter and a bit of a heartache because of that last bit. Namarie, God bless, Antane :) Author Reply: Yes, I was doing a bit of echoing and foreshadowing here. One of the delights of writing fanfic is that it takes very few words to evoke a certain feeling, because the reader already knows what will happen...

Poor Hildifons. He hoped no other hobbit ever faced a decision like that. And yet, it will be his own chosen heir that must make this very same choice, for much the same reasons. I like that it was Hildifon's journal that caused Bilbo to write his own memoirs in such a carefree way, as he had always told it to the children of the Shire. Author Reply: Well, of course I was doing a bit of foreshadowing there. I think Bilbo was by nature, a more reticent sort of person-- much like Frodo, I don't think he would have cared to bare his soul to the world.

Oh, indeed! Definitely the things that Bilbo would have pondered at this point! Losing respectability is one thing.... Author Reply: ...but losing a limb, or becoming crippled in some way is quite another. Yes, indeed!
