“Posh,” Pippin said. “It’s a crown, not a law or custom, and wearing it has nothing to do with fortitude. I doubt the people would care if you wore it all day long or not if you didn’t wish to, no matter what the custom was – if any of them can even remember the customs. None of them were alive a thousand years ago, after all. They’re just happy to have a king again. They don’t care about the crown. What difference does it make to them if you’re wearing it in the privy, for instance? Unless the weight of it causes you to loose balance when you’re trying to stand up and you fall backward, hit your head on the wall and give yourself a concussion on your way to the bottom of the latrine. They would mind that, I’d wager.”

I'm with Pippin, here! For reasons aforementioned.

Author Reply: Pippin certainly has an unique perspective! Hobbits don't hold with rituals much, though they do follow "The Rules" because they are just and right. The only ritual they hold to is getting six square meals a day! :D

Aragorn choked on his wine. “What?”

“You would never find the crown if that happened. At least, I wouldn’t want to be the one to have to search for it, and who’d want to wear it after that? Best not to wear it at all, if you ask me. You don’t suppose that’s ever actually happened, has it?

*guffaws*Oh mercy!* What a perfect bit of Pippish logic!

I love that Aragorn saw right through the Pippish AND Pip's concerns for Ashtir/Sador to the youngest hobbit's *real* worries about returning home. He really has gotten to know his hobbit friends well.

Sador's description of slavery was much more realistic than the original descriptions given to the Gondorians-- and I'm very glad we did not have to have a description of slavery in the Houses of the Eye!

And poor Jamila! That's another consequence of slavery: even a pampered slave, well loved by her Master or Mistress, is going to be robbed of initiative and the ability to make her own decisions and to imagine a life without being told what to do. Add to that the misery of being taken away from all she's known in her life! Poor dear! But I am sure Osric is up to the task of making her happy again.

Author Reply: You know, that Pippish was a late addition and I almost took it back out again, but there just hasn't been that much Pippish in this story yet. ;D

Aragorn must have learned from Boromir, that when the Pippish starts, just latch onto the last thing said and go from there. :P I actually didn't write that conversation with Pippin's misgivings in mind, but I'm glad that Aragorn was able to get him talking. I'm sure all the hobbits are wondering what will happen once they're home again. We already know Sam's worrying over Rosie.

Oh, I wouldn't want to even *imagine* what the rumors are like, much less the actual system and customs they have in place for their slaves! *shudders*

Jamila is simply overwhelmed right now. She can't tell left from right and she's wondering how this could have happened to her, the queen's most favored maid. Once the dust settles a little, I think she will begin to adjust to her new surroundings and life. Having Osric there will be a great help, I'm sure. :)

Ah, a night of education! Poor girl--having to learn all anew and finding herself learning mundane matters! And love that Aragorn is thoughtful of Pippin's sensibilities.

Author Reply: Aragorn learned quite a bit tonight, and knew when to dismiss Pippin so he didn't learn too much, but Jamila has the most to learn. She has to learn an entirely new way to live - both as a free person and as a "Pale Skin". She's out of her depth and feeling very overwhelmed. Having to learn to clean and cook is not helping! ;)

I love Aragorn's short conversation with Pippin. The king needs honest (and entertaining) counselors, and Pippin will remember all of this about laws and customs of this when he becomes Thain.

you’ll be surprised just how brave love can make you. That’s why the Great Eye ultimately failed; he thought the only strength was in might of arms and brute force. He never knew how weak he really was.

That's wonderful.

Author Reply: Pippin is certainly honest as well as entertaining! Sometimes a little too much of both, but he's grown a lot over the quest and has really learned to curb his impulses. Pippin has an excellent role model in Aragorn.

Sauron, for being a Great Eye, really was blind to the true and absolute strength that one derives from love.

That was very insightful!
At the moment Sador is more familiar with the life of the Haradrim than the Gondorians'. But he finds out that he quickly remembers the Gondorian customs - and eventually feels at home again.
Aragorn would love to see all the slaves freed, I'm sure. But I think Sador made it clear that the problem cannot be solved immediately and that the Haradrim would not want him to solve it.

Jamila IS a freed slave. And she is not happy about it, not yet :-)
I can very well understand that she feels abandoned and lonely. It's time for her to meet Osric again!

Last, but not least: I just love "Pippish"!

“You would never find the crown if that happened. At least, I wouldn’t want to be the one to have to search for it, and who’d want to wear it after that? Best not to wear it at all, if you ask me. You don’t suppose that’s ever actually happened, has it? What do you think it’s like for him?” Pippin asked.

ROTFL! That was ADVANCED "Pippish", right? No wonder, Aragorn had his problems!

Author Reply: Sador is still adjusting, and it will take some time before he feels completely at home again, but he's learned from his time in Harad that the best way to fit in is to pretend you know what you're doing.

The desire to free the slaves helped to start a civil war in the States. One can only imagine it would do the same in Harad - and they're already preparing to go to war with the Houses of the Eye! One step at a time is wisest here, if not ideal for the slaves.

Jamila is completely overwhelmed at the moment and feeling extremely vulnerable and confused. It will take her a long time to adjust, but Osric will but up to the task, I'm sure. :)

Very advanced Pippish. You need a degree in Pippish to understand that stream of consciousness babble. lol! Aragorn must have learned from Boromir to simply focus on the last thing said and ignore the rest! :D
