He has already embraced despair! Alas for Denethor--beaten before any victory either way!

What a shame that Denethor would die not knowing that Faramir's actions in Ithilien, i.e. not taking the Ring and allowing the halflings to continue their journey, would result in the defeat of Sauron. I guess it is a short jump, given Denethor's state of mind even now, from burning his and Faramir's bodies, to burning them both alive. Sad and evocative chapter. Author Reply: Bless you! For all Denethor's foresight - it availed him naught.

I can feel Denethor's despair, you make it so easy to see the situation from his point of view, it is so easy to judge him and forget what a great man he was and how much he sacrified for Gondor, all the wight of his responsibility with so little reward, he didn't even saw the final victory. Great chapter. Author Reply: Mithrandir himself speaks of Denethor, in the book, as being very wise. I have only tried to show what might have caused the downfall of this magnificent Numenorean, for Tolkien leaves almost everything but the last few days of his life up for conjecture. By the time we meet him, he is close to lost. I thank you, sincerely and deeply, for your kind words.

The end is near and despair is rampant. My heart aches for Denethor. The palantir has warped his mind so much that he cannot see hope, no mater how little it might be. He has placed Haldan in a very difficult position. How can he expect anyone to set fire to him and Faramir? That is way too much to ask. I think you are going to feel a real sense of loss when the last chapter is finally written Author Reply: I am sorry that you are confused... I must not have written clearly enough. Haldan has been asked to find Denethor and Faramir's bodies and cremate them - after they have been killed by the Enemy - before their bodies are defiled. As for a sense of loss - I think I will find some bar and drink myself senseless.....
