| It would make sense for the elves to be able to tell how well a tree was suited to a particular task, before it was felled. I especially liked how the whiteness of the tree's bark actually matches with the name Vingilot. It made the tree feel more elvish. Author Reply: Thanks for the comments! Actually, Tolkien shows that his knowledge of shipbuilding is a bit faulty, because birch is not a good wood for shipbuilding; but I figure I can always excuse it by saying that the species of birch in Nimbrethil was made extinct when Beleriand sank, so maybe it had better properties for it! :) It must have been interesting for the Elven foresters, since they could communicate with the trees. Someday I want to write something from the tree's POV... | |

| Well done, Rhyselle! I could just see the scene, meldenya! Especially the tall, tall birch tree...I can picture it so clearly in my mind. But I have to wonder whether the Elves would let it be cut down...I wonder what tomorrow's NaQua will bring! Tye-melin, Kaylee! Author Reply: Well, Kaylee, I think that the tree must have agreed to be used so, since they could talk to the elves and vice versa. I like to think that Earendil might have a bit of that ability to sense if a tree is willing to sacrifice itself for a special purpose. | |
