Fascinating! 'Maison' makes a good Lucifer figure. Nothing is evil in the beginning, but isn't there a step which takes you beyod redemption, and didn't Sauron take it? After that you just have to keep gnawing yourself in the darkness, presumably for ever. Great reading, anyway. Author Reply: I'm not sure that Sauron was totally beyond redemption - I think Iluvatar might not have wanted to waste all that was in Sauron, not without giving him a chance. But first Sauron had to be taken down - drastically. Any actual redemption would have taken probably tens of thousands of our years; his sins were great. I deliberately left the ending in the eye of the beholder, because it was rather too big a choice for me to make, and I couldn't quite second-guess the supreme being of Tolkien's universe. Thanks for reading and reviewing, Nesta.

How perfect--that Sauron needed to lose himself in order to find himself in the end. And am so glad for you and Nath for letting me know Sauron's original name! Thank you! Author Reply: I did intend for the story to focus on Sauron's losses - power, corporeal form, his very self, to be eligible for remaking. Even supernatural power isn't everything, is it... Thanx for reading and commenting, Larner!

Dark Muse Approved™. Need I say more? Author Reply: Well that makes me feel good, especially coming from such an outstanding interpreter of Sauron's life and times and the Dark Muse himself. Thanx again for your encouragement and assistance, Pande!

This is quite unique, something I'd never thought about, yet reading it made me wonder why I hadn't. A fascinating look at Sauron's downfall from his point of view. Author Reply: Thanx for reviewing, Linda - I never had the urge to write Sauron seriously before I thought of this piece. I just didn't think that Sauron would just evaporate completely from all planes of existence. And it was interesting progression to write. I'm glad you found it interesting.

Impressive. The structure with all those "His..." sentences worked out well. As for the question at the end, yes, it was good to leave that open. Author Reply: I'm glad you thought that particular structure worked out well; it just flowed out of me as I started to write; sort of a reflection of Sauron's very powerful sense of self as it is broken down. Thanx for reading and reviewing, Virtuella!

I don't think I've ever seen this from Sauron's POV before, but you've done it brilliantly! His helplessness and rage are perfectly captured, as is his realization of what it all means in the end. Author Reply: Sauron is definitely not going to go gentle into any good night; and the contrast between being the high-and-mighty-Dark-Lord and being a helpless disembodied spirit had to have been one heckuva shock for him, not to mention a spiritual/actual sort of comeuppance... Thanx for reading and reviewing, Dreamflower!

Very lividly written, Raksha, and interesting alternative fates for Sauron. Author Reply: Thanx for reviewing; Inzilbeth; writing Sauron seriously was quite a challenge, and pondering his possible ultimate fates took me into new territory as a writer...

He heard the Voice of the One summon him by his most ancient name. He remembered the resonance of that Voice, which had once poured forth the songs of creation. And the notes that had once been his in the Great Music arose in his heart, as the only greeting he yet had strength to make. This is marvelous. I never thought about what happened to Sauron after the wind dispersed his "shape of shadow". Author Reply: I'm so glad you liked the piece, Shirebound; it wasn't easy to write but made for an interesting, mind-stretching creative exercise. I don't think that he just meekly disappeared from the universe forever...

This is a truly masterful piece of writing Raksha. Author Reply: What a lovely compliment, Harrowcat - thanx! I was rather nervous about trying this; writing nearly all-powerful Dark Lords seriously is a bit intimidating, so your feedback is especially appreciated!
