Poor Boromir, duty before birthdays. I should should say though that when the battle started Boromir would have been on the Eastern shore: Before the battle Gondor held the Eastern half of the city, they were driven back to the western shore by the attack. Author Reply: I have always understood that the only foothold that Gondor had on the Eastern side of the River in those days was at Henneth Annun in Ithilien -- the city of Osgiliath being held on the eastern side by the forces of Sauron. The bridge stood between, and they cast it down when it became obvious the enemy would attempt to pass over. Boromir does say, "Only a remnant of our eastern force came back, destroying the last bridge that still stood amid the ruins of Osgiliath..." but I've always taken that to mean either troops from Ithilien, or a brief sortie into enemy territory in their battle to hold the bridge. However, I really ought to investigate that idea more thoroughly. I am beginning to wonder if I might not be mistaken in my interpretation! Rereading those words of Boromir after not looking at them recently causes me to see them somewhat differently now... Thanks so much for reading and reviewing, and also for giving me some food for thought and research. I just might have to do a version two of this wee tale. ;-) | |
