"He looked once more at Mirimë’s changing eyes. She might look like an ordinary hobbit matron at the moment, but he could not quite forget that she was not any such thing. “I think you already know the answer to those questions in your heart, Frodo. Why does it distress you so?” Frodo gazed at her again, and then dropped his eyes. He sat there silent for a moment, and then rose from his chair. “Excuse me, Mirimë. Thank you for an excellent meal. Uncle Bilbo, I think I will retire now.” -An excellent moment caught simply and beautifully.

oh dear, poor Frodo! I know where this is going of course, since I've already read this (and was just bad at reviewing) but poor Frodo, and Bilbo, and Mirime, too! Author Reply: Indeed. Frodo did have rather a strong reaction, didn't he?

Leave it to Frodo to notice and ask the tough questions. Considering not only his intelligence, but his personal history, it's not so surprising that he thinks along that line, isn't it? Author Reply: Yes, he would ask the "tough questions" and expect the true answers as well! And you are right, his personal history definitely contributes to the sort he's asking!

Oh-oh. Frodo is seriously ticked off. That can't be good! Author Reply: Yep. Not good. But only to be expected at this point in time.

Oops! It looks as if Frodo believes that all that was done for hobbits was done so he might one day destroy the Ring. I wonder if that was all there was to it, though... Author Reply: Well, if you look at the history of the Third Age, coldly and logically, and just look at the actual events-- it is certainly a possibility that has to be thought of... But of course that can't be all there is to it, anymore than cold logical reason is all there is to life...

So does he think now that he was always meant to go on the quest, that his entire people had been chosen, even groomed for this task since their very beginning? How interesting, though of course one wouldn't wish that an entire species was conceived with such an utilitarian attitude. Author Reply: I think it's a question that has to be considered from all angles when looking at the history of the Third Age. Obviously it's not a question Frodo is comfortable with, and he is going to have to come to terms with the idea. And as for the idea "that an entire species was conceived with such an utilitarian attitude", it's not beyond the realms of possibility, though I think that we will find there is far more to it than that eventually.

It would appear that the thought of Hobbits being predestined to save the world wrankles somewhat, or at least makes him feel as if he had been manipulated by the Powers, much as Fiondil's Glorfindel often finds himself resenting their interference in his life. Excellent chapter! Author Reply: The question of being predestined is a hard one to deal with even when one doesn't have personal experience of having to deal with a task to save the world.

Troubling indeed. Of course, Frodo would make the connections and would be upset by them. He will need to take to sort out his thoughts and feelings on the matter before he is ready to hear the answer - which he already knows in his heart. Author Reply: It's a large question for anyone to ponder, and even more difficult when the answers are personal ones. He does have a lot to sort out.

Go Frodo! I'm absurdly pleased that he's thinking about this, and that he's not quite okay with it yet. This one is masterfully subtle. Author Reply: I don't think he should yet be okay with it-- his role was one that he was ambivalent about from the beginning, and just because he is beginning to heal in the West, it does not mean that ambiguity will just go away. And thanks. I did want to be subtle about it!
