| Pippin and Merry have every right to be proud of their mothers, for without them and their fathers, they would not be the hobbits they are. Esme and Tina were likely walking on clouds the rest of the day! What a wonderful ficlet! Author Reply: Of course they are proud of their mothers-- though said mothers might be too modest to admit that their sons have just as much reason to be proud of mum as mum does of her son! | |

| A lovely vignette; well-written from Esme's POV; one can feel her excitement at this historic day, which for much of her life was unanticipated and really never thought possible. I love the last line too - a wonderful portrait of a great lady on a great day. Author Reply: Thank you so much! It's true: this day was truly momentous! Of course, they'd known since the Ruffians were thrown out that the King had returned (and in my Shire there was considerable communication and even visits before the Ban-- though NOT the King himself, but his representatives) But a King in far off Gondor is still a rather distant figure, compared to a King to be seen in person! I've always thought Esmeralda must truly have been a great lady; aside from her Tookish descent and her illustrious marriage, she raised a fine son, and had a hand, in my opinion, in the raising of both her husband's cousin and also her nephew! They were all three exceptional hobbits, and I like to believe she contributed to that! I'm so glad you enjoyed it! | |

| Oh Dreamflower! Happy Birthday, and thank you for gifting us with this most excellent tale! I loved Esmeralda here, and I loved how Aragorn honored her! Her hundredth birthday, wonderful! Although it's sad that Paladin and Saradoc are both gone now, I hope Pippin and Merry cut respectable figures as Thain and Master! (Pippin can't be The Took yet, with Eglantine still there, right? *wonders if Esme is still head of the Brandybuck family*) Happy birthday! >:D< Kaylee Author Reply: Yes, according to the Family Trees in Appendix C, Saradoc passed away in SR 1432 and then Paladin two years later in SR 1434. So, yes, they are already Master and Thain! The issue of the widow remaining the Family Head is complicated in "my" Shire. After Lalia, for a while, it went out of fashion for the widow to retain the Family Headship if her son was of age-- because no one wanted to be thought of as "another Lalia"! But then came the Troubles, and some widows were left without sons who were of age, so they had to keep their headship, and it became less onerous as people began to forget about Lalia. I've always left it that the widow had the option to turn the headship over if she wished, if the son or other heir was of age. In Merry's case, Esmeralda availed herself of that option, and gave the headship of the Brandybucks over to him rather quickly. But most Brandybucks still tend to defer to her as Mistress, and Estella is fine with that. In Eglantine's case, Pippin was afraid his mother would fade after she lost Paladin. He persuaded her to retain the title of "the Took" in order to give her a bit of interest in life-- though what he actually *told* her was he needed her help, as his duties as Thain were a lot greater now that the King had returned. How long she will continue to retain it is up to her. And thanks for the birthday wishes! I'm glad you enjoyed this little mathom! | |

| Happy birthday Dreamflower! I have been reading everything but have had no time to leave reviews - life has been absolutely chaotic lately but I wanted to tell you how much I loved this one. Esme is one of my favourite characters and I loved seeing her reactions to this most famous of visits. I'm so glad that Merry and Pip were able to introduce their mothers to their friend and King. I felt as though I was standing there too - you described it perfectly. I will catch up with all the rest of your wonderful stories, I promise! Author Reply: Thank you, dear! I know how crazy RL can be at times! Don't feel bad that you haven't commented on every little thing-- that happens to us all from time to time! I love Esme, too, and have felt especially close to her since having "her" participate in Back to Middle-earth Month! | Lovely! I can see everything so clearly--such an exciting occasion, and then for Esme to find out that the King and Queen are not the distant, dazzling figures you'd seem, but real, and warm, and living, and loving... Brought her loved ones through toil and danger, and out of shadow... I wonder what hobbits will say now, instead of "When the King comes back..."? Author Reply: When I was taking part in the role-play of Back to Middle-earth Month, our team's character was Esme-- and it was 101 year old Esme, who remembered meeting the King the previous year. I really got fond of that version of her, so this is a tribute to that! You know, I can see the saying living on with a new meaning-- instead of something that will NEVER happen, it will gradually become a saying about something that is bound to happen sooner or later, even though it seems far off at the moment! | |
