I planned to settle in and read a story I'd missed in my twenty year perusal and enjoyment of fanfiction. But wait! After the eagles came, (cavalry)the beleaguered troops were supposed to realize the ring was destroyed. So, what's all this about Sam? Thanks to your reviewers and your responses to them I realize I'll have to hunt down Cusp of Victory to put this chapter in context. Good job for writing so compellingly that I'm committed to avail myself of your complete tale. I give war stories a wide berth, but I recognize a well written description of combat's brutality, desperation and demoralizing elements. In your story I'm not even sure of the outcome. I call this being hooked. Thank you for an intriguing first chapter.

Aha! How perfect this moment is depicted in the AU you've postulated! So--all heard as Sam poured the water of the Phial over the Ring! Excellent! Author Reply: Hello Larner, yep, just about everyone within hearing distance now knows how utterly p***ed off Sauron is at Sam, though they don't yet know why. Wonder how they'll react when they find out what happened in the Sammath Naur ... If Sam or Frodo actually tell anyone! Thanks for R & R -ing, M ;)

Great! A sequel! Aragorn and Gandalf will be even more astonished when they hear what happened at Mt. Doom - if Sam and Frodo will tell them. Those two will have a lot to sort out! But first of all they should be rescued and healed, at least physically! I'm looking forward to reading more. Author Reply: Hello Andrea, yes they will, won't they? Sweet, noble Frodo trying to chew Sam's hand off, slit his throat, strangle him ... and that's before we even get to Sam's Ring/Ringwraith b****slapping marathon. Of course, it wasn't really Frodo who did those things - but try telling him that. Poor wee hobbit. *sniffle* At least he and Sam should be rescued soon, if Gandalf gets a move on. But whether either will speak of what happened in Sammath Naur ... who knows? It might be too much for them to remember ... Thanks for R & R-ing, m'dear, M :)

Too bad Anger Management classes didn't exist back in Sauron's day. Looking forward to the rest of the story. :o) Author Reply: Hello cookiefleck, gosh can you imagine Sauron in an Anger Management class? Imagine his classmates - Voldemort, Darth Vader, Emperor Palpatine, etc. etc. Crikey, that doesn't bear thinking about ... Updates for Hollow Victory will be slower, m'dear, but longer in length than the prequel. Thanks for R & R-ing, M ;)

Excellent beginning. I am so glad you are planning a sequel. Thank you. Author Reply: Hello UTfrog, yep, a sequel indeed, though I've started it rather sooner than I intended. I just can't seem to help myself. But the postings won't be nearly as fast and furious as with Cusp of Victory, though chapters will be longer (a nice wee compromise, eh?). Thanks for R & R-ing, M ;)

My dear cousin! I've heard of Christmas in July, but Christmas in September? Time does fly! :) How very delightful to see the sequel beginning already and quite suspenseful for those at the Black Gate. You have really shown that battle to be as terrible as it really must have been. Sauron's voice really carries, doesn't it? I so look forward to reading more as Frodo and Sam deal with the aftermath of this, hollow indeed will it feel at first at least, but I hope they realize they are still wild about each other and that love will help heal the wounds they have internally and externally. Please do throw away any doubts you have that not only do you live up to my expectations, but exceed them as well! *hugs* *bows to the Mistress of Angst and Drama and of course Hobbity Love* Namarie, God bless, Your happy bloom and berry who is going to be even happier this weekend since I am going to be with my nieces and nephews watching ROTK to a live orchestra! :) :) Aren't you jealous? :) :) :) Author Reply: Hello Berry, and Merry Christmas to you! I wasn't going to start this for a few months yet, but alas! for me ... The bug bit when I began to wonder what the reaction Sam's warping of the Ring would have on the battle at the Black Gate, and I simply had to start. A lot of the battle was extrapolated from RoK, in fact, so I can't takt too much credit for that. At most I tweaked a few parts. Still, if it gave a sense of the enormity of the fight between good and evil outside the Sammath Naur, then great :) I hope you enjoyed your cinema/orchestra RoTK experience and, yes: I was jealous. You lucky, lucky sod. Next chapter should have a bit of Sam and Frodo in it - unless my imagination dictates otherwise when I'm writing it ... Thanks for R & R-ing, m'dear! Your cous, Mo x
