Ah, in my version the Gaffer becomes surprised to learn Master Bilbo has managed to sneakily get all his children reading and writing--only Sam does so openly, and Marigold because she refuses to allow Sam to go without teaching her what he was taught earlier in the day. But the Gaffer would have been out of his depth no matter what--and certainly Sam was most improperly named, after all! Heh!

Oh goodness gracious. I have often wondered how the Gaffer was ever persuaded to let Sam have his book learning. Makes me want to thump him upside the head. And your version of the Gaffer is usually so much more reasonable than most.

I hope Sam will be allowed to continue his lessons! I like how you have included the Cotton family in your story! Kind of helps set the stage for later happenings! Looking forward to more! Thank you!

What a treat, coming in from work to find a new chapter! You have done really well to portray the negative, rather parochial nature of Hobbit society, with its class distinctions and rigid hierarchy. Don't you just want to shake them!! Great chapter Helen
