The survivors combed through the wreckage and told dark tales of the world before its end. Wow. Orc storytellers. Never considered that. But they must have had them. Having heard a lot of professional storytelling over the years, and done a bit myself (not so well) as a children's librarian, this "humanizes" orcs a bit more than I'm comfortable with.... And now you've got me imagining orcs at a 21st century storytellers' convention ... the stories they'd tell (not simply Middle-earth, but modern stories they might choose: maybe war stories or the grimmer Grimm tales -- or axe murderers or serial rapists or something along the line of Hannibal Lector) ... their orkish storytelling style ... the reactions of the other storytelling pro's.... Oh, my! Author Reply: //And now you've got me imagining orcs at a 21st century storytellers' convention ... // Oh, I like that! Why not, after all? There are stories about Elves lingering on in the modern world - why not Orcs? I think they could make a very good living as screenwriters for ridiculous action films, if nothing else. The next few drabbles will have some Orcish tales from the early days of ME, which might not help as far as humanisation goes... | |
